Portable Chrome causing PC Chrome to stop functioning

So after using Chrome on my work PC through my USB drive and thinking "Wow this is amazing, will prove very useful"

I turn off my PC and go home.

The next day, I return to work, open up chrome to access all the websites I need for my day to day working and well.

Chrome on my PC does nothing.
I click, nothing. I think maybe the shortcuts broken, I try to the actual .exe in the program files, nothing. I try running as Admin, nothing.

I think "balls to this", uninstall it and redownload it.
Lost all my add-ins and everything, but it works.

This is frustrating, what is causing the issue, how can I fix it?
Is this a known problem with the Chrome build?

Thanks,

Jake

Shutdown?

Did you waited Chrome Portable to completely close before shutting down your computer?
If not, I can even tell you why it stopped working.

I had closed Chrome Portable

I had closed Chrome Portable down and ejected the USB drive safely before I left.

I had the exact same problem,

I had the exact same problem, but I haven't installed a new chrome yet. I see that the user data folder is still full with the profile files, maybe something is salvage-able?

this didn't happen on many computers I used chrome portable on. I'm running a windows 7 x64 on a mac and just installed the latest chrome portable onto my pendrive yesterday. Today I tried opening the original local chrome and it won`t open

Reinstall

If you just reinstall Chrome (without uninstalling), it should work. Just download the current Chrome installer in Firefox or IE and run it.

Chrome's install setup is quite buggy. It uses a bit of a hack to install on Windows without admin rights and be able to self-update (insecurely) without prompting the user. So, instead of installing properly to Program Files and being runnable, it installs to your USERPROFILE directory (for every user who wants it on a given PC) and, once installed, uses a registry key to understand what version it is. If either the install or the version key are altered in any way (as they can be by the user without getting the User Access Control prompt in Windows), it will stop working. Luckily, a reinstall will usually fix it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
