Old Versions folder on Mediafire in case you for some reason want to play around with the outdated versions.

Release Notes:

Development Test 1 (2011-06-04): Initial release
Development Test 2 (2011-06-13): Changed package version info
Development Test 3 (2011-12-10): Base App updated
Development Test 4 (2012-10-01): Fixed a few bugs including a default save location issue that caused files to be left behind and settings lost if the unknowing user didn't change the User Data Folder option in the Advanced tab of user settings. This fix caused me to make 2 versions one for use without the platform that stores user data in the /Data folder for the app. As well as one for with the platform that uses a subfolder in the PortableApps.com Documents Folder.

Known Issues with no known solutions:

The recent documents stored in some of the programs .txt configuration files can't be kept updated while giving the user the ability to move the user data from the default folder, this customization is in my opinion more important so I have removed any attempts at keeping them updated. It should be noted that this does not affect a local version due to using different data directories.

Caveat: I have not downloaded this yet. With that said, here we go:

  1. This post should be moved to the Beta testing forum
  2. What is the license for this app?
  3. What is the application? This isn't clear in your description.

Welcome here, don't hesitate to ask for help if you run into troubles with your package.

Added / Moved

It's freeware but not OSS from what I see. So I added that and moved it to Beta Testing so people will test it out.

Base app version

The appinfo.ini Package version should be listed something like this: 3.9.4821091.1
and the display version should be listed as 4.0.482.1091 Development Test 1

That's just my recommendation, anyway, as there isn't a specific way to do this (yet). I wouldn't be surprised if something gets added to the PA.c Format Specification so there is a standardized way to number apps.

Note that the base app is now at 4.0.485.1094

Oh, and validation succeeded.

[EDIT] EULA is listed in the appinfo as GPL2.0, but opensource is listed as false. Which is it?

Hint not taken

This app is freeware and can not be hosted for download on Sourceforge. Thought you might have gotten my earlier implication about that but guess you did not.

Online installer?

If the app is bundled into the installer, this makes it freeware too, so hosting on SF would be illegal. However, if it is an online installer, there's no such problem.

Feedback

You shouldn't distribute the installer in a zip file; by doing so, you're only saving about 30KB of bandwidth while creating a nuisance of having to first unzip it before running the installer. It's not needed.

Secondly the installer's EULA.txt should be the license included in the base app, BYOND, which pops up on the first page of the installer. Copy that into notepad, and replace EULA.txt with it.

Thirdly, it looks like you opened the directory up in a Mac before you packaged it, so it created those ._junk files all over the place (yet another reason to hate Macs Blum ). In AppInfo\Launcher, you got ._BYONDPortable.ini, in AppInfo, App, BYOND, BYOND\cfg, BYOND\help, Other, you got .DS_Store files, all not needed either.

Fourthly, your App\readme.txt file is empty. Look at another portable app for what should be in there.

Fifthly, your help.html file is formatted incorrectly. To keep things more or less uniform, check out the help.html file from another portable app (I always use Notepad2-mod Portable's help file) and then open it up in KompoZer Portable and edit it. You can add some extra stuff at the bottom, but all those shortcuts in the Other\help folder are not needed.

Sixthly, your app isn't quite portable. It creates a folder %DOCUMENTS%\BYOND, but that's easy to handle in PAL. I didn't check the registry.

Seventhly, I'm not sure if your aware of how to do this or not, but you can check MD5 sum of an app with WinMD5Sum Portable.

Eigthly, I recommend MediaFire for filehosting.

Good luck Smile

1: I thought I had posted it

1: I thought I had posted it non-zipped when I switched file servers the old one wouldn't allow exe's

2: I will fix that when I upload next time in about a week when I get home to an unmetered internet connection.

3: I use that drive for all my on the go data I'll clean that out before I repackage

4+5: I did my best to make the help files properly would you please send me a zip file containing those the way you are wanting and I will put them in gamerz.rule@yahoo.com

6: It does that when you either run the auto update or use the non-portable exe or maybe if you ran it without having the default data folder with the .reg file that registry file is where the program stores the data directory address when it auto relaunches after the auto-update the portable launcher process has sensed the program shutdown and shuts itself down also before the relaunch has triggered. The program now thinks it is launching for the first time unless the machine already had an installed copy in which case it uses that data folder for this launch.

7: I will fix that when I upload as well.

8: I will look into using that if they have a free username available that will do what is required for this project as well as my other cloud storage.

Ok

4+5: No need for any special ZIP file. Notepad2-modPortable is merely a 1 MB download. You can install it to your Desktop, open up Notepad2-modPortable\help.html and Notepad2-modPortable\App\readme.txt. Replace the words Notepad2-mod with BYOND in both files, tweak the description in the help.html file and you're good. Both of which can actually be easily edited in Notepad.

6: All I did was install the app to my Desktop and ran it through a sandbox, logged in as Guest, and modified settings, and such at random to see if everything was working fine. Literally all that needs to be done is add a

profile=%DOCUMENTS%\BYOND

line to a [DirectoriesMove] section in the launcher INI and you're good. (testing was in Win 7 Home Premium, Admin, UAC disabled).

All of my testing was on XP I

All of my testing was on XP I will look into that bug when I get home EDIT: I reread your post and it might be that is where it decided the PortableAppsDocuments directory was as that is where the default location is set as the application was made for coding games with and it is easier to do that with easy and fast access to the library directory that is in that save data folder. Please try it on a PA.c drive and let me know if it still does that. If it does I will try adding that line, otherwise I will upload an alternate version for use without a PA.c drive/menu setup

I have the html help file setup in a way that is the best I can do/ am willing to take the time to do if you want me to change it send me what you want me to replace it with and I will look into it, otherwise it will probably remain the same.

I made this for my own use when I had no internet at home, and used it regularly. I shared it because I thought others might use it. I am growing tired of caring for it. If anyone wants to take over, let me know and I will help get the posts for it transfered or if that can't be done transfer this username.

I will make one more update with the changes I promised and keep it hosted until someone else takes over.

At some point it's default

At some point it's default registry key containing the user directory was lost. When I repaired it to go where it was supposed to then if installed on the desktop it still goes to the my documents folder. Because of this I will post two editions of this version one for use with the platform, and one for without it.

Two versions?

I read over your post regarding two versions, and here's my suggestion: make a single version that stores user data in Data, not in the Documents folder. If a user wishes to reset their settings for one reason or another, they expect to be able to delete Data and be good to go. However, based on the info you've indicated above, this isn't possible.

Alternatively, if you no longer plan on developing this, rather than making any changes just add [Dropped] to the subject of your main post, so other developers know you've dropped it.

1. I feel that the data in

1. I feel that the data in the BYOND games folders needs to be easily accessible to easily create games efficiently this is not possible when the data is 4-5 layers down from the first linkable spot, when the data is in a folder in the documents folder of the PA.c Platform it is 1-2 layers from the nearest possible linked location.

If someone wants to start with fresh settings you can simply delete the contents of the set data directory of the app, or you can change the directory in the program and tell it not to transfer the old data thus leaving a backup then you close the program and delete the new ones contents. If you want to just delete the Data folder in the app for a full reset just get the NP version it will still run with the platform if you want it to.

2. I have decided to at least keep the base app included up to date while searching for a new administrator for the app which as of the time you posted was mentioned in the first paragraph of the first post, I also listed some additional information concerning the known bugs.

I just uploaded an installer

I just uploaded an installer that includes last nights update to the base app. The base app update included a change to the internal updater's reboot processes which fixed the loss of portability during updating. Now the only remaining semi-issue is not being able to keep the recent documents list up to date through drive changes. Gord Caswell said he would be able to fix that as soon as he could find some spare time, so it should be 100% bug free soon.
