The 3.3.x updates of Gramps only show the portable launcher briefly.
The main program never runs, and I have waited just in case it was a slow load.
But I don't think it is that as I have waited up to 10 minutes.
And I have never noticed anything appearing in the task manager, other then the portable launcher.
This has happened on both local and fresh installs as well as upgrades.
The only thing that has worked is a 'rollback' to 3.2.6 .
I am on Win 7 64 SP1, 8 GB Ram
[8 MB corrected to 8 GB - Windows 7 would not start on a system with 8 MB of RAM - Mod Chris]
Thank you Chris for catching my typing error.
It is GB not MB.
Added info,
I have tried disabling the UAC and running as Administrator.
No change that I could see, it still didn't work.
I can't help. I have neither the released Gramps Portable 3.3.0 (Rev2) nor Windows 7.
I'm having the same problem running Gramps 3.3.x on an XP SP3 system.
What's your installation path?
I installed it to the Desktop on Windows XP and it wouldn't start. Though it did just fine on Windows 7 (spaces in both). Bart.S, you think we should pull this and await stabilization of 3.3.x?
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Same problem here on Windows Vista. Splash screen comes up, then nothing.
I've got Gramps installed to the desktop also. Everything worked fine until I upgraded to 3.3.
Disclaimer: I'm not a real farmer, but I play one on the PC.
As long as it works at X:\PortableApps\GrampsPortable (and here it does on XP) I wouldn't pull it.
To say it in your words: Tweakers (who choose a different installation path) are on their own!
Point taken about Tweakers, but what about us faithful followers who install it to the right USB directory, using XP and it still doesn't work. Bring back 3.2.6!! Keep up the excellent work, looking forward to all those java apps!
Hi Bart.S,
I use Gramps installed to C:\PortableApps\GrampsPortable on Vista and it fails just as stated, so how is that tweaked. Also it worked fine before the upgrade to the 3.3 line. Since more than one person is having problems, then that means there is a real problem somewhere.
Thanks.

I have installed 3.0.0 rev 2 on two different USB devices on two different computer both running XP sp3 with the latest M$ updates. Both Fail to run. Also tried it to local HD f:\PortableApps\... still no go.
Meh, users don't like your Gramps. Let's pull the release (at least link to 3.2.6 from the app page).
Well sort of.
I am posting this in hopes it may help determine where the break really is. I am not a programmer by trade, but I dabble a bit, and I am not shy about poking around when the interest is there. I use Gramps a lot as I am trying to build my Family tree so the fact that it is portable is great, as I visit with Family I can just bring my flash drive and use their PC. Thanks for the work on this app, here is what I did:
I was able to install 3.2.6 and verified that it works. Then I went to the main Gramps site and downloaded the 3.0.0 version and installed it, I had to install python32, but that was minor. once installed I simply copied the filed from the regular Gramps install to the PortableGramps folder in the correct locations and it now works. This was all done on my 8GB Sandisk Crusier.
Don't do that because it's not portable that way (It works doesn't mean portable). For the same reason Gramps Portable 3.3.0 Rev2 was made. (You could use that as a base for your tweaks.)
Thanks for trying to help.
This won't run on any of my computers running Win 7 64. I gather the 64 bit is the problem and not Win 7 itself.
I also can't make the regular Gramps 3.3.x work on this platform, God knows I've tried. The Gramps installer refuses to "see" any of the dependencies. Maybe the problem is related.
Hope you manage to build a working version. Gramps portable is particularly useful since the program is so difficult to install to begin with.
I think you should put 3.2.6 back up for all those on 64-bit systems.
Tested on 32-bit Win 7. Doesn't work there either.
Hmm, now this has been reported to the Gramps bug tracking system as well (see 0005084).
As there seem to be issues with Gramps 3.3.0, I've rolled the release back to 3.2.6.

Re-Release?
Noone was forced to update to 3.3.0. A simple note and link to the old version would have been sufficient.
Just my 2 cents.
With the updater, it's more important that we take people back to Gramps 3.2.6 which should work for everyone, rather than one which won't work for many people. This will make the update path work for those who have updated to 3.3.0 and discovered it has broken it for them - this will fix it.

You forgot that there is no official updater yet. It's still beta.
Furthermore automatic rolling back causes issues as well:
Is Gramps 3.3.0 still being made into a portable app, or has it been abandoned? Thank you.
It's being worked on. There are some overall issues with 3.3.0 itself which may need addressing, but Bart.S is working on a 3.3.0 package based on the 3.2.6 package for release in the near future since 3.3.1 may be a bit away.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Well, basically it's on hold. It's ready since a month or so, but it hasn't been released officially (just for friends and family). Since 3.3.1 seems more far away then expected, maybe I'll post 3.3.0 soon. We'll see.
First I need a new name, because 3.3.0 Rev 3 ... sounds bad. Hmmm, maybe something like Gramps Portable 3.3.0 Ultimate Bart.S Edition Gold ("Very long prelude to the next version"). 8)
i'd gladly try my hand at it. As it is, I down-graded my version on my desktop to match the portable version, so that I could exchange information between the two. Would love to do this with 3.3.0. Thanks for all of your work.
Bart,
I hate to prompt, knowing everyone working on this are volunteers, so I thought I'd just state the issue I've encountered, to see if it makes any impact on the re-release date. After having run the update to 3.3.0 Rev 2 and not having it open, I eventually worked back to downgrading it to 3.2.6 like everyone else. However, I am now seeing some rather flaky behavior on occasion in the app that I don't recall seeing before. The Gramps support team indicates that when you upgrade to version 3.3.0 there are some data base changes that occur, so you can't just use the 3.3.0 database with 3.2.6. I don't know how accurate that is or if I just misunderstood what they were trying to say, nor have I been able to directly confirm the version of the data base being used, as it didn't seem like the 3.3.0 launch ever came up enough to alter the data base. While I believe I'd restored a 3.2.6 version of the data base I'm not certain of that.
While the Gramps board did seem to indicate that they were working with a number of issues, apparently because they hadn't received enough responses to their first beta to release a beta 2 before going gold, I don't know if they are severe enough to trigger a major hold on the release of the PortableApps version. Besides, don't they say that the third times a charm? If so, just going with Rev. 3 should be perfect!
Seriously, while I have not done any direct Python development before, I'd be happy to do anything I can to assist. As I believe I was one of the first to report an issue with the Rev 2 release under Windows 7, if it would help to have additional people willing to try it with different system configurations, I'd be happy to. There is obviously something that was a bit flaky about the install or sensitive to the system configuration as I'd assume that a number of people successfully installed and ran the app before you released it. (Which from my own experience I know can be particularly frustrating.)
While 3.3.0 sounds like it has a number of new features that I look forward to trying out, I'm particularly interested in seeing if it makes so of the currently observed glitches go away. Just let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Cheers,
John
Bart,
I see a prompt was unnecessary, as v.3.3.0-1 was released on 16 August. I've downloaded it and was able to install and run it with no problems. Haven't had a chance to play with it much so far, but it does appear to have resolved the flakiness that I observed in some of the windows after having to move back to 3.2.6.
So far it looks like this version is a significant improvement. At the very least the interface has been thoroughly reworked, which looks like it should make data input easier. Thank you all very much for your efforts.
Cheers,
John
Having Gramps in a portable form with PortableApps.com is a terrific idea, and I appreciate the efforts made to create this version (3.3.1). However, when I start it (after doing the updates, installing the available add-ons, etc.), I get the following error messages:
Failed Loading View
The view Graph View did not load. See Help Menu, Plugin Manager for more info.
Use http://bugs.gramps-project.org to submit bugs of official views, contact the view author (gary.burton@zen.co.uk) otherwise.
In the Plugin Manager, Loaded Plugins I see the following line:
Fail graphview.py Visible GraphViz (http://www.graphviz.org) is required for this view to work
Is there some way to get whatever is needed (presumably pygoocanvas and graphview.py) to be installed or incorporated into Gramps portable?
Thanks for any help
How to add Graphviz and/or Ghostscript see # or #.
In the meantime Ghostscript Portable has been released too, so I think it's possible to use that one (I haven't checked). You'll have to adjust the ini-Setting accordingly (relative paths of course).
