LOL

Probably, yeah. I'm not a programmer, so I'm liable to get names mixed up unless it's something popular, based on what I know.

Apparently there's a free one, but the limitations prevent some fancy feature the PortableApps.com Platform uses from compiling, so the $1,000 version is required. As I understand it.

I guess it's still "open source" if the IDE costs an ungodly amount of money to legally use, but it seems to me that it gets around the point of being "open" by artificially limiting the number of people who can potentially (and legally) work on it. But then I'm not a programmer, maybe it has some advantages over the ones that are free to develop with. I think John's said it's faster and more efficient than C++. I know Assembly Language is the most efficient, but also harder to code for. I guess the easier it is to code, the less efficient it is -- maybe. Mostly speculating.

The free one is called Lazarus

My PAM Theme Builder is done entirely in Lazarus.

Apparently there's a free one, but the limitations prevent some fancy feature the PortableApps.com Platform uses from compiling, so the $1,000 version is required. As I understand it.

Honestly, I don't know how true that statement is. I know that JTH and Co. are quite well-versed in Delphi. It's possible that many years ago, when the PA Menu was first designed, that Lazarus did not have all the bells and whistles. However, like most active open source projects, Lazarus has been progressing in that time.
While the PA Platform is well-designed, it's not extremely complicated. It is highly likely that at this point, the Lazarus IDE could accomplish everything that Delphi does for the Platform.
That would require someone porting the code into Lazarus. I know that someone started that in the past, but I don't know how far they got. I may try it myself once 2.0 comes out - I'd want to see the newest code before I start. It's kind of a tedious job, tho, and Real Life(tm) is already pretty full.

Libraries

There are a couple of closed-source libraries that the Platform depends on (there was a PNG alpha one and I think something else) which would need replacing with FreePascal. I think a new component or two was being introduced into 2.0 as well, we'll need to wait and see though. This is by far the most significant portion of the expected burden, I believe.

As you say, once 2.0 is released we'll be in a better position to analyse it. If it is decided that it's a reasonable project, then once the source code is under version control, I think we will have a better chance to try making it compatible.

...Just mentioning a possible bug...

Hi! I am tight on my scedule and sorry if posting on the wrong place. Just wanted to mention that I tried the beta launcher and wanted to use LibreOffice in live mode. (used a virtual cd image for that).
It was complaining in an error message that there could be problems. It seems it is in the launcher.
It is not critical but very annoying especially for an end user.
(I know it is yet the beta - hope will be right in the final or earlier versions.)

Best wishes and keep up the good work!

Wrong place

This is the wrong place for that. Please post this in the LibreOffice support forum. This thread is for the Platform, not other apps.

It seems it is the platform.

Thanks. A link would be helpful for that. But I am pretty sure ... (OK seriously think about) that it is an issue (let us say - unnecessary warning) with the platform text on the head of the error. (Will try catch a screenshot when I see it next time.)

Possibly not a bug but a possible unnecessary warning. (Which would be OK if it were localised.)

There is no problem normally start LibreOffice but in 'Live' mode.

I hope it is the right place to take suggestions becouse I would have some! B-)

Thanks for the answer!

I don't think it's the platform but rather a message from the launcher. Maybe LibreOffice Portable does not support Live mode or simply warns you before you try. Either way the best place posting a bug report would be the LibreOffice section here in the forums.

Chrome Updating Bug

I had an older version of Google Chrome (Beta 11), so I checked out the Updater. Wicked sweet dude! The problem is, when I found out I accidently downloaded Beta 11, I updated it, but I froze halfway when it was about to finish. I to do it the old way, which was download the installation file from the site and then add it.

Updater enhancement

Hi

I was wondering if there was a way to stop the updater checking a particular application. Skype 5.x must have changed the way it connects to the internet as from work I can not connect unless I use skype 4.2. I like using the updater but am paranoid that at some point I am going to forget to uncheck skype and will no longer be able to use it from work.

Hope that makes sense, thanks for any help/advice you can give.

Back up your current version of Skype

Since a portable app is self-contained within its own folder, you can just zip up that folder and stash it in case.
So zip up x:\portableapps\skypeportable and save it on x:\documents. That way, if you accidentally upgrade skype, you can uninstall the upgrade and restore it from your zip file.

Updated the Update.ini

Looks like you are right I updated the Update.ini file to show version 10 of skype and it has gone from the list of apps that require update, thanks.

UPDATE :- No wait I must have had the file locked or something cause I have run update again and the update.ini file is showing version 5 again and Skype is back in my list.

ANOTHER UPDATE :- just dawned on me you mean update the appinfo.ini file in the SkypePortable folder, this has worked thanks very much.

Updater

Hi guys!

I am just asking, because the updater always tells, that all my apps are up to date. Do i have to use "Install a New App" button to include another app to the suite? Or is possible just to copy app which I am already using into the "PortableApps" folder?

Thanks!

Adding new apps

Welcome to PortableApps!
The PortableApps platform updater currently only works with official portable apps that you already have installed.
To install a new official portable app, you need to download its installer (the .paf.exe file) first. Then you can use the "Install a new app" function. It will allow you to browse for your downloaded installer, and then will automatically install it into the platform.
If you have unofficial portable apps, you could copy the folder into your x:/PortableApps folder, but depending on who created it, results may vary.
If the apps you want to add are not already portable, it's not really advisable.

Check this out:
https://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#addingotherapps

Also - the upcoming version of the platform will include an enhanced updater that will allow you to select, then automatically download and install any app in the official PortableApps collection.

Categories?

Is the category feature running in beta 5?

How do you turn it on?

Everything else looks great to me!

Too good to be true. It must be a bug.

This makes Portable apps a zillion (more) time easier to use.
Which must surely be the definition of too god to be true.

I cannot accept my everyday work to have become so much more convenient.
I LOVE IT!!

Backup doesn't work

I love the new platform but one thing I have discovered is the backup does not work. More precisely, the restore doesn't work. The backup and restore complete successfully but nothing works. In most cases, the formatting on the drive is lost completely. I run my thumb drive with a NTFS partition so I'm not sure if that has any effect. I will try to do a recovery on a FAT32 partition and convert it after then post my results here.

Still failed

I tried it in FAT32 and it still failed. Not sure what is happening but perhaps it's worth a look by the developers.

One other thing. I have rebuilt my thumb drive from scratch. I have manually assigned the drive letter of B: to my drive. For some reason, PortableApps installers do not see my drive and always select the install directory as \Program instead of B:\PortableApps\Program. Any idea how I can modify this behavior?

B is filtered out

B is defined for floppy drives at the BIOS level of most systems. And it causes big issues when you try to access it and there is no drive in it. As such, A: and B: are filtered out of the installers list of drives that it looks for the platform on. This behavior is not expected to change. Z: is a better option.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Logical

Logical reason. Thanks for the reply John and keep up the good work! Aside from the (what I consider minor) issue with the backup, the new 2.0 platform is fantastic!

V2 Beta 5 Prev 2 - Updater and menu items name rules ...

Hello,

first ... I have a problem after running an update, which is, that the menu is unresponsive after an update.

second ... I have some applications with two executables in the applications folder like abc.exe and abc64.exe.
Those executables mostly have nearly identical file version information, so that the file or product name is identical.
Those files are represented by equal named menu items.

What's about providing more information with the menu item names, their tooltips, etc.? And perhaps only if menu items have identical names?!

Thanks and keep on!

Tootips

The info in the tooltip includes the folder path, but not the executable name. If the executable name was included, it would solve this issue. I know that this had been requested in the past, but I have no idea if there are plans to adopt this practice.
Meanwhile, you can rename them in the menu, but you'll need to use trial-and-error to figure out which is which first.

If the menu is unresponsive

If the menu is unresponsive for some time, it is caused by refreshing the app list. You don't get any feedback during the refresh, but it should become responsive after a while.

I was not precise enough.

It's not the menu of the scanned, recognized applications on the left, but the menu on the right, that is !partial! unresponsive.

After updating some of the applications, even after waiting a while, because I see no progressbar for refreshing the list of applications, parts of the menu on the right are inactive or unresponsive - e.g. to explore is no problem, but to maintain the applications is, while to exit the PA.c Platform is no problem, too.
