Would be great to see it on portableapps.com! I guess porting is not that hard, since it is open source software.

Software is available at

I had looked into this

I had looked into this, there was a reason I dropped it, though. I don't remember why...

Maybe someone else will pick it up.

Maybe because

you read this on the download page?

Be carreful digiKam is not as stable under windows as under linux because of some bugs in the underlying KDE libs.

KDE dependencies

Nope, that wasn't it, I believe it was due to the tight integration with KDE for Windows.

But don't quote me on that. Smile

Marble is also part of KDE on Windows

Well, Marble is also part of the "KDE on Windows" project. Nonetheless there is a portable version, see here:

very different

Marble provides a Windows build that is independent of the huge KDE on Windows install. This app does not appear to. Unlike Marble or standalone GTK or Qt based apps, apps that depend on the KDE on Windows environment are not considered candidates for becoming portable apps due to the fact that they requie the huge KDE install, don't have true windows installers available and KDE's need to be installed at the local system level.

Windows Installer

Hey John,
there is also a standalone Windows installer called
digiKam-installer-2.0.0rc-win32.exe

http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/2.0.0-rc/digiKam-i...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/2.0.0-rc/

I guess it is what you meant. Thus it is quite similar to marble, isn't it?

Thanks for all replies so far...BTW the PortableApps.com Platform 2 is AWESOME

Not currnet

That is for a release candidate, not for the current build.

Ah, Not Yet Updated

Yes, that is what we need. Though it appears the 'official' Windows installer is still at 1.7.0. 2.0.0 got a release candidate (which you linked) but not a final installer. It could be that it's just not done yet as 2.0.0 just went stable 4 days ago. Have you asked the devs if they could update the standalone Windows installer to 2.0.0 final?

okay

Just a few minutes ago I wrote an email to Patrick Spendrin, since he seems to be responsible for the Windows port. I hope he will reply and/or update the standalone installer to the final version.

Further contact persons of the digiKam project can be found here:

http://www.digikam.org/drupal/contact

(if it should be necessary for the development of the portable edition)

I got reply...

I got reply from Patrik Spendrin. He told, that he isn't responsible for the Windows installer, but Gilles Caulier is...and that he is in good hope that Gilles will create also an installer for the latest version.

Thus I wrote an email to Gilles Caulier...

Waiting for window installer

If/when this gets updated for 2.0.0, I'll give this another go.

Installs full KDE program files into program folder

This installer, without even running digikam following install, installs almost 1GB of files into the app's folder, as it installs all of the KDE library's files. If this cannot be trimmed down to be exclusively digikam files, I will not be portablizing it. Maybe someone else will, but I doubt it will become officially released here as a result. See above for reasoning.

Can this package be distributed requiring only Qt as a dependency? similar to how Marble does it? This kind of package would be perfect for portablization.

Thanks!

Hey Gilles Caulier THANK YOU for the released installers, especially for the final standalone Microsoft Windows Installer which can be found here:

New and final release!

In the meanwhile Gilles Caulier released the final standalone Microsoft Windows Installer for the latest version.
You can find it here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/digikam/files/digikam/2.0.0/

The final release is trimmed down to 250 MB and thus includes only the parts necessary to run digiKam.

@Gord Caswell: Can you now redeem your pledge give this another go? Thanks.
Of course I'll help you with the testing stuff.

I've looked into this again

I have looked into doing this again, however, the windows installer still installs the full kde4 framework, rather than only the files required for digikam itself to run. Accordingly, I won't be putting together a development test for digikam unless/until this gets changed in packaging the standalone installer for Windows by the digikam team.

Smaller Installer

I wrote an other email to Gilles Caulier and asked him, whether he could create an Installer including only digiKam itself and digiKam relevant stuff.

Still, it would be nice if you would put together a development test...to test it. If it works with the big Installer, it will also work with a smaller version without significant changes I guess.

Have a great day.

Installer

BTW.: I forgot to mention, that Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable should be included in the portable, using the current Windows Installer.
Ah and well...is less than one GB really THAT much today? Otherwise the current Installer is fine as well...

How about this...

How about this...you create a development test version and tell me how you did it step by step and I'll try to take care for future versions, updates, etc.?

Messy

The issue is that digiKam installs and requires the KDE framework, which is a huge mess of files/directories/stuff that I don't know if that has ever been made portable. It will likely require a lot more effort - including figuring out where all that KDE4 runtime stuff goes and how it could be simulated to have it installed - to make the app portable than just grabbing the digiKam installed directory and then seeing what it does in a clean virtual machine.

If, on the otherhand, digiKam can be made into a standalone app (including all the bits it needs in a single installer that installs to a single location without requiring a separate KDE for Windows monolithic install), then we can get to portablizing it. All the GTK-based apps on Windows have switched to this method (Pidgin, GIMP, GnuCash, etc) and we portablize all of those without issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

digiKam

I installed digiKam in order to test it. I must say it has the potential to be an important piece of software for us photographer. The interface is is well thought out IMHO and the functionality is reasonably complete.

In my mind there are 2 major issues. 1) The size of the install as discussed here and 2) stability. The Windows port is not very stable. It crashes frequently. The Windows port is known to have problems, especially with the KDE stuff. I have tested it with a copy of my photographs (~50,000 photos) and must say that I haven't seen any corruption because of the crashes. An updated release is scheduled for September, hopefully that will fix the crashes.

I question the portability of the package. Further investigation needs to be done to make sure that the database does not contain hard links to photos, etc. I'm not sure I have all the skills needed to make that determination, but I intend to continue to look at it.

Revisiting its Potential

Hi Devs,

I hate to bring up an old thread but I've been playing with RAW processors lately and I use the PortableApp version of RawTherapee a lot. Although the PortableApp version isn't updated as much.

I would like to try DigiKam and I have read through this thread and understand the situation that the whole KDE was being installed with the package. And also that it isn't as stable. So I wanted to ask if these are still the case with the current version of DigiKam, which is version 5.0.0. Will someone be cable to analyze if it has become favorable to be made portable?

Many thanks for all your hard work.

Brian

RawTherapee Updates

We provide the latest stable version of RawTherapee as specifically requested by the publisher. More recent builds are alpha quality and not meant for production use also according to the publisher.

Oh I'm very grateful for the

Oh I'm very grateful for the work you all have done with Rawtherapee (RT) Portable. I use the desktop version when I'm at home and the portable version when I'm at work. Switching between the desktop and the portable version I notice that they've added some new features on the desktop version, like the new Retinex. And also the interface has changed a tiny bit.

On topic however, the reason I'm looking into other raw image processors has nothing to do with the portable version of RT, but about the RT app itself. The noise reduction tools of RT doesn't seem to display a realtime feedback for me, or the effect is just too subtle and sometimes it comes totally different from what the preview is. So I've been looking in Lightzone and DigiKam.

Again, many thanks for all your hard work.

Can possibility of having digikam at MobileApp be revisited?

Hi, guys,

It's been a while since a possibility of having digiKam on PortableApps was investigated.

Is there a chance that it can be added to the software collection now?

Thank you,

BM
