unable to update apps

Using 2.0 beta 5, Vista Home Basic 32bit (also tested on XP Pro, Win7 Pro).

If I try to update my apps at least 1 app is listed (firefox 5.0.1). Currently i'm using Firefox 3.6.18, and I don't want to upgrade in the moment.

So today I try to update again and two updates were listed: VLC and Firefox.
I uncheck Firefox and clicked on next. After a while of downloading the updater responds: download error: transfer error on file http://...VLCPortable_1.1.11.paf.exe
I can click ok to continue. Then a new windows appears: one or more errors occoured while attemping to update your software....

If I download the files using the portable firefox or locally installed firefox. The download completes and is able to update the outdated version.
I allready checked for drive errors using chkdsk but no error was found.

Language is german.
The bug does occour since some months here. At first I tought there is a problem with bug downloads but it isn't. VLC is about 20 MB.

The bug still exists. I tried

The bug still exists.

I tried to download an update for SuperTuxKart.

There are 2 to 10 kB missing for finishing the download.

I tried to clear the temp dir but the bug still exists.

Is there any chance to show some debug messages? If I download the portable file the upgrade is possible.

Only User With This Issue

To my knowledge, you're the only user experiencing this issue. There is nothing more the log can tell you than the error message does. Something there is killing off the connection before it finishes. It could just be that the download component's timeout is lower than your browser, which is why you can download it in the browser. The download component doesn't do anything special above a standard HTTP download, just like you'd do it in the browser. It does this using the PC's proxy and connection settings, just like IE does.

Basically, it's not a TEMP issue. Or an issue with our servers. It's either an issue between our download servers and your PC (corporate/university/ISP proxy) or an issue on your PC itself (local antivirus/antimalware/firewall). If it was a broader issue with our servers or our downloader, we'd have hundreds of similar bug reports in the last few weeks.

No he (or she) is not the only one!

The topic starter is absolutely not the only user with these problems.
About a year ago or so I've pointed it out somewhere in the forum (you can look it up).
And guess what: you're always more or less telling that it is an user problem.
Well, that's an effective way of solving problems, but I don't like this kind of denial. I rather see a solid solution to these pesky problems.

This whole concept of application portability is very nice, but the updater is unfortunately a bit suck-ish and this really breaks down the user experience.

As far as I can tell all apps that are hosted externally update fine and those hosted on Sourceforge break each time.

Did you by any chance notice that Sourceforge implements an annoying download delayer? It is quite remarkable that all downloads done with the updater break after those 5 seconds.

BTW: my platform version is Dutch.

Direct Downloads

When used with something like wget or the inetc download component in NSIS, the downloads from SourceForge happen directly. It's only when you use a browser or similar that you see a delay page. Downloads from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria are, of course, blocked as per US policy.

If you are seeing something else, then this is new. But it is still a very rare occurrence, which is why it hasn't been investigated more thoroughly (remember, there are hundreds of thousands of people using the updater in test). In this case, could you please include complete details of your operating system, exact install path, version of the platform, etc. Please try and do a Get More Apps and install Magnifying Glass Portable (which is on SOurceForge and very small). Please detail the exact bits you see. Do you see any download progress on the second progress bar? (There are two, one up top with the overall progress, one below with progress on the download including estimated time, bytes per second, etc). What is the exact error you see? What kind of internet connection do you have? Are you directly connected or do you use a proxy? Is it at a school or a company? Have you tried it with another connection in another location to ensure it isn't a network issue?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
