[Closed] Firefox 6.0 incompatible with JRE 6 Update 26

I've found that currently Firefox 6.0 is incompatible with JRE 6 Update 26. On the other hand, Firefox 6.0 is indeed compatible with Java SE 7, but Java SE 7 is not yet available on java.com. In fact, I've found that with Java SE 7.0 occur currently some issues, because it's impossible to use websites with Java applets.

Is it not far more useful, that the download of Firefox 6.0 will offered earliest with the completion of Java SE 7.0 for end users?

huh?

I'm guessing english as a second language may be involved here because your final question doesn't quite make sense. But, as jportable doesn't work with firefox anyway, this is basically not our problem.

not jPortable is my main problem

My statements refer only to a locally installed JRE. To that extent I think, that my question makes sense.

how to check this?

I was also confused by the fact, that the java console extension was marked as incompatible, but well this should not be completely incompatible with all the java.
(on local install, portable does not work anyway)

In fact I went to a site which definitely needs java, and all seemed to work there, or at least what I could observe.

How do you test the compatibility exactly?

Console

It's likely just the java console that is incompatible but not the java plugin. As I don't use java on websites, I saw the same issue on upgrading my local ff but did not care.

problem with the website www.yahoo.com

I've found on the website www.yahoo.com, that I can`t use the part with games there (in my case the game backgammon).

yahoo

just tried on my XP

FF6 just updated, then checkd if plugins are correct, reported java plugin to be correct, present and uptodate (6/26)

went to the yahoo games, all works there fine, even the backgamon does work

went to my banking site, they use java now for some functions there, all works, went to some radio site which I know uses java, all works there too.

So could it be that you are using the java 7 and therefore some problems? As no problems seem to come up with 6/26.

The java 7 seems to be a kind of beta only, so if this is causing the problems well...

------
now I tried on w7 x64, FF6 and java 6/26
all works here too

as third I tried on ubuntu 11.04 with FF6 and also java 6/26, all works there as well.

not only yahoo games, but also my bank and radio site which use java for special functions.

That is very odd

I have installed VirtualBox by Oracle on my machine with OS Windows XP Home SP3. In this VirtualBox I use a locally installed version of Firefox 6.0 in conjunction with JRE 6 Update 26. And I can not play Backgammon via the website www.yahoo.com.

I will test now, if I under Ubuntu 9.04 (also installed in my Virtualbox) have better luck.

Works Fine Here

I can play backgammon on yahoo.com just fine here using Firefox 6 and Java Update 26. It's only the Java Console extension that is disabled and listed as incompatible within Add-Ons - Extensions. The Java plugin under Add-Ons - Plugins is enabled and working just fine. I'd suggest trying it on a real PC instead of under a virtual machine to eliminate that as a cause.

perhaps the virtual machine is the cause

You might be right, that the virtual machine is the cause, although it works well with firefox 5.0.1 in connection with JRE 6 update 26. Therefore I'll test it on a real PC. To this end, I always use a Windows XP computer at an Internet Cafe Smile

What is the difference between a) the Java Console (which is disabled) and the Java plugin (which is enabled)? Apparently Firefox uses the Java plugin or?

Console

I think the console is for error reporting or debugging. It's not used normally to my knowledge.

Aha

At this point, thanks again for the really helpful tips, which have increased my understanding regarding the above described problems.

Unfortunately, an installation of Firefox 6.0 on Ubuntu 9.04 was not possible. The oldest version - under which it is possible to install Firefox 6.0 - is Ubuntu 10.04.

Ditch 9

Support for 9.04 and 9.10 has already ended. So, nobody should be running 9 anymore. New versions of Firefox won't be released for it. The current releases are 11.04 or 10.04 LTS.

I know

To be honest I hardly use Ubuntu. That's why I still have this old version. Of course, I could download an iso image of the latest Ubuntu version and integrate it in a new VM. But my interest is apparently not large enough.

Incidentally I now want to implement my plan, to make a program regarding an interesting game portable. However, this is not Backgammon, although I also like to make this game portable. Maybe later when I have more experience and knowledge Smile
For example I have installed GNU Backgammon on my PC. This program is world-class, regarding the level of play. One of the worlds best players (Neil Kazaross) has remarked on this program the following:

I have no doubt that GNU Backgammon 2-ply
would show a positive result if given enough time vs. any
human player in match play.

And that is really true.

Try Installing Java 7

You can always try installing Java 7 locally, if you want, and see if that works. But as this involves Java and Firefox, it isn't really related to what we do here since Firefox only works with a local JRE. That's the point I'm trying to make.

Java 7 is already installed on my PC

Immediately after the release of Java 7 I have it installed locally. After this Instellation I realized that there were already problems with Firefox 5.0.1. And certainly this same problem will now occur with Firefox 6.0.

The reason is quite clear that the Jave SE 7 is not yet mature. But is it not advisable to offer the portable version of Firefox 6.0 when the essential problems of Java SE 7 are eliminated?

Nope

Firefox 6 is the currently-supported version of Firefox. 5.0.1 has known security issues and should no longer be used. You have an issue with Java and Firefox, I'd take it up with Oracle and/or Mozilla. All we do is make the apps portable.

As most users don't use Java in browsers anymore and Java working with Firefox Portable is not portable and outside our control anyway, it's not a huge issue overall. Granted, it is for you, but it looks like you're going to have to wait for things to clear up. I'd stick with 6 Update 26 installed locally for now and ignore the Java console error.

Ok

I see the problem just like you. So I think, that currently the combination of Firefox 5.0.1 with JRE 6 Update 26 for me is the optimal solution. And this despite of some security issues in Firefix 5.0.1, because also Firefox 6.0 ist not perfect.

Firefox 6.0 and JRE 6 Update 26 works fine

The actual cause of the incompatibility between Firefox 6.0 and JRE 6 Update 26 was my virtual machine. On a real PC everything works fine.
