I have a device with a 30GB hard disk with about 20GB of stuff on it. I was doing some serious monkeying around with the device (a firmware upgrade), so I did the prudent thing of backing it up using PortableApps Backup to a zip file. This got everything AFAICT.
After problems with the firmware upgrade, I used PortableApps Backup to restore my files after deleting/recreating the partion and formatting it. I was somewhat dismayed to discover that only 13GB was restored. I noticed that particular folders were missing, so I used WinRAR to check the zip and those folders and their contents were present in the zip.
I used WinRAR to extract all the files from the zip to the device and my device was fully restored.
So it seems that the restore functionality of PortableApps Backup needs more work to be effective on higher capacity devices. In the meantime, I think I'll look for something a bit more mature such as Abakt http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt/
NB - Maybe PortableApps Backup needs its own support forum.
Which folders was it that it didn't restore?
7-zip's command line program is being passed only one exclude parameter on a restore of a full drive:
-x!PortableApps\PortableAppsBackup
That should exclude the PortableApps\PortableAppsBackup directory (since this is where it's running from and may mess it up.
Any idea why the others didn't restore? Anything else running? Could you hang onto that backup? I may ask you to try a test if you don't mind.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I know it was a number of folders that weren't restored. The one that sticks in my mind is Video which had a number of large media files in it.
As for other apps running, I had Firefox from the desktop and Azureus running.
That backup's sticking around for now, but it may go bye-bye at some point. For me, it would probably be preferable to do a new backup and restore cycle depending on what I do with the device. With that in mind, I'd be happy to try a test.
