FreeCiv 2.3.0 Won't Start

Just finished upgrading to FreeCiv Portable 2.3.0 (from FreeCiv 2.2.7) and now it won't start. The splash screen shows up as it normally does and then nothing. I've never encountered a problem with any of the previous versions of FreeCiv Portable and I'm running a fully up-to-date and patched version of Win XP Home SP3.

Hi, ...FreeCiv 2.3.0 Won't

Hi, ...

FreeCiv 2.3.0 Won't Start

At my side, the update from an older version to a new version, dont work.

Then install from the new version, into an other place "like in the desktop", and copy/paste the "Data" directory, from the old version of FreeCiv, to the new version of FreeCiv "Data" directory.

After, test with the new version. (Now it must work and it will contain your old Data section inside).

Please respond if necessary, ...

FAIL

Thanks for your reply sst.

I did exactly as you suggested and FreeCiv 2.3.0 still won't start. When I revert to version 2.2.7, however, everything is fine.

Any other ideas?

I have found the real problem

I have found the real problem = It's the directory "amplio" inside "FreecivPortable\App\Freeciv\data\"

Follow this step, ...

1) You can keep your FreeCiv 2.3.0 installed updated package.

2) When you update to FreeCiv 2.3.0 = it keep the directory "amplio" inside "FreecivPortable\App\Freeciv\data\"

3) To fix that = rename and/or delete the "amplio" directory. But keep the "amplio2" directory.

4) Then now, you will have a working software.

But if you try the latest portable package = it dont make that problem = because it dont contain the directory "amplio".

Success!

I am happy to report that you have successfully solved the problem sst!

Thank you so much for your detective work.

Will there be a way to have the amplio directory deleted automatically in future versions of FreeCiv Portable? I'm sure someone muchy savvier than I will be able to write the appropriate command to accomplish this. Smile

And to John, my install location is X:\PortableApps\FreecivPortable

Where are you installing it by the way (full path)?
