I was hoping to install many of the apps on the HD of my brand new notebook (i7 running win 7 premium) but I'm having trouble getting past the same error, whether using portapp platform (beta or stable release, same error) as well as individual apps. Was originally trying to install under/program files (x86) but even installing under less restrictive areas of the HD makes no difference...
FWIW, I ran this silly MS app and it reports no probs http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
I can get as far as choosing the install path and then I get an error saying it can't write to desktop.ini in the designated install folder.
Kinda bummed as I am looking forward to simplified app mgmt using port apps.
Any idea what this might be? Googling doesn't seem to turn up anything useful...

portapps platform won't install on win7prem
What you've got there is clearly a permissions problem. Bear in mind that Microsoft Fix it installer will be running as administrator, while the PortableApps.com Platform installer is not.
The Program Files directory is not supported for potable apps at all and most will not function correctly on Vista/7.
Due to the way UAC works, you'll need to install to a directory which it can write to without user privilege elevation. Make sure you put it in such a directory and it will work.

Perhaps you could suggest a better place to install in win7? I initially tried under the /Program files (x86) then under /users
Wouldn't the installer be able to request admin rights to install?
It's possible (and easy) for the installer to request elevation, but if you install it to a place where it can't write normally, the apps won't work after installation without also being run as admin.

Install to c:\ root itself. It'll create a PortableApps directory there and your apps will go inside it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
So /Users is a restricted branch while the root folder is open season. This lesson was my welcome to the world of MS Win7 (thanks for your help)
C:\ may not be restricted, depending on whether you're logged in as admin (I speak of sans UAC elevation) or not. C:\Users will be restricted. C:\Users\username won't.

as a backup from my usb. I just put the whole folder from my usb there and everynow and then run it from there with no problem.
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
why don't you install it on a USB device
