Don't know if anyone has noticed this happen (I did have search) before but FF has been using the wrong Java here.
Background: looking at a performance issue I found FF Portable was using
C:\PROGRA~1\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zip
rather than something under
\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java
Uninstalling QT left remnants in the XP registry like
QTJAVA=C:\PROGRA~1\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zip
that needed to be tidied by hand and eye.
FF and similar apps that rely on Java are much happier now.
Possible suggestion for discussion and comment:
should PA's Java appear in the PATH before QT's if present?
Yeah, I know this could be a can of worms.
At present, the PortableApps.com Launcher takes a local JRE first for performance reasons (so it doesn't need to load up the whole JRE from the much slower USB disk). I am not aware of any portability problems caused by using one in a different path, so it ends up coming to performance (and you can't be as sure of the state of the local one which could be messed up, but I haven't heard any reports of this being a problem).

He's talking about Firefox, which has nothing to do with PAL and it's Java handling is entirely up to the Sun JRE plugin if you have it installed locally. In short, it's nothing to do with us. Firefox doesn't work with jPortable. There's a note to that effect right on the jPortable page.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Didn't read quite closely enough.

Cheers, guys. Hadn't noticed the comment on the jPortable page. Have given the system another Java to play with so all well again.
