[Closed] Impossibility to use the new feature "Remote" in µTorrent 3.0

In µTorrent 3.0 has been integrated among other things the new feature "Remote". With this feature I have the option of remote control of the program μTorrent via a web interface.

First, I must adjust this new feature. For that I am going first to Options -> Preferences -> Remote, where I enable the checkbox next to "Enable µTorrent Remote Access". Afterwards I create an username and password. The web interface can be reached at the address https://web.utorrent.com. There you log in with the previously specified username and password.

If I now close and restart µTorrent after this preliminary work, then I get an error message. Accordingly it is impossible to use the web interface https://web.utorrent.com.

If however I install µTorrent in the traditional way on the computer, I can use the new feature "Remote" without problems.

This I tested on a computer with OS Windows XP SP3.

Local Only

As with most apps' remote features, this is designed to be installed and used locally on a single computer and then controlled by you from other locations. As such, it is incompatible with uTorrent in a portable setup.

What a pity!

Although this is not good news, I must though accept this fact.

Settings

It may be possible for us to portablize the settings somehow. Do you know where it stores them?

exploration of the settings

So far I discovered the above described problem in two different variants.

  1. Use of a computer in an internet cafe
  2. In this case, I had only limited access, so I have no insight into the settings of the program.

  3. Creation of a new sandbox on my own computer
  4. I have created a new sandbox within the program sandboxie, which is installed in my virtual machine with the OS Windows XP SP3. In this new sandbox I have installed µTorrent. However, it is not so easy to explore in this sandbox the corresponding settings. But I'll try anyway.

Should I not find out the settings about this sandbox, then I'll install µTorrent in my virtual machine.

Location of the storage of the settings

After installing µTorrent in a new sandbox I could find out the following locations, in which µTorrent stores the settings:

  1. C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\utorrent
  2. C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\utorrent
  3. In the registry in the hives HKCR, HKCU, HKLM and HKU in a lot of keys. Of course a lot of keys and values can be ignored, how I have read here.

Possibly it may be more useful, if I make a snapshot with Regshot before and after setting up the feature "Remote" in µTorrent. Unfortunately it's impossible to use Regshot in connection with a sandbox.

Run sandboxed RegEdit

And export the new/changed keys. The upload them to a pastebin.

Previously known as kAlug.

too many keys

I have already run the sandboxed regedit.exe. However, in order to find out all the new keys, I had very often press the button F3 in the registry editor. I have noted a large part by hand. There were more as eight pages in DIN A4 format.

After close

Are those files/folders still in those locations after you close utorrent? Or only while it is running? If they're not there when you close it, the settings are being backed up to Data properly.

Clarification of my problem

The files/folders, which I described above, are not created in conjunction with the portable version of µTorrent. Instead these files/folders are created in conjunction with the normal installation of µTorrent. In my original post I have explained, that the feature "Remote", which is new in the version 3.0 of µTorrent, can't be used with the portable version of µTorrent (only in conjuntion with a normal installation of µTorrent).

Try It

When you set it up and had uTorrent running, it did work correct? In that case, try a Regshot before running and after configuring it during use.

Ok

Yes it work correct after I have adjusted the feature "Remote" in µTorrent. But I need to install µTorrent in my virtual machine because I can't use Regshot in conjunction with an installation of µTorrent in a sandbox.

Result of the scan with Regshot

I've now done a scan with Regshot on a computer with OS Windows XP Home in an Internet cafe. The user name of this computer is TerminalWorld.

First I installed µTorrent on the traditional way. After that I started µTorrent and closed it again. Now I created the first snapshot with Regshot. Then I started µTorrent again and went to Options -> Preferences -> Remote. Now I enabled the checkbox next to "Enable µTorrent Remote Access". Afterwards I created an username and password. Then I closed again µTorrent. Now I created the second snapshot with Regshot. I compared both snapshots and saved the result in the file utorrentremote.txt.

After my analysis of this text file I would guess that the changes in the following registry key are related with the activation of the above feature "Remote":

  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG\Seed

Seed is meaningless

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG\Seed is a meaningless value which changes all the time—it's a random number generator seed. I don't understand why they store it in the registry at all, but I presume there's a reason.

Are you running µTorrent or µTorrent Portable? If you're running µTorrent, this gives no information; if you're running µTorrent Portable, the stuff in
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\TerminalWorld\Anwendungsdaten\uTorrent
shouldn't be happening.

I run µTorrent

I run µTorrent. The reason for this was that since the version 3.0 of µTorrent exist a new feature called "Remote". But unfortunately I can't use this feature in conjunction with µTorrent Portable. Only with µTorrent it's possible to use this new feature.

For this reason I have performed the above-described scan with Regshot before and after setting up this feature "Remote". Thus I wanted to find out the changes, which are related to the establishment of this feature. These changes could then be used as the basis to make this feature portable.

Or how should I solve this problem?
