Are you intending to send it to a publisher?

You can do the basic layout of a text book in LibreOffice Writer. You can insert the Page number by using Insert>Fields>Page Number - and if you put it into the footer, it will appear on every page.
However, if you want to send it to the publisher, or print it out with the page numbers collated for a folded booklet printed on 2 sides, or any number of more advanced functions, I suggest Scribus. There isn't an official PA.c version, but there are excellent un-official test release versions here.
Scribus takes a decent amount of patience to learn, but it's quite powerful.

Ah, so you are saying

Abiword or Abiword Portable does not do book type stuff correct ?, good information about those other 2 programs thanks for that. P.S. No it does not need to ne sent to a Publisher, but I probably would like to print it out to be used as a hard copy plus read by others.

Wrong place

We do not provide AbiWord support. We provide AbiWord Portable support.

I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

More Detail

Hello Chris, to start, since I am using abiword portable, to me this is the correct place to ask that question. So I need more detail on why, (1) does abiword portable not do what I want ?. (2) does abiword portable not have all the same functions as abiword ?.

AbiWord

We provide support for the portable side of the software. We don't provide support for the software itself since we didn't write it nor do we know everything about its features and functionality. If you have a support question about the platform, the installers, our format, or a portablization issue with a specific app (example: X works in the local version but doesn't in the portable version, or it's leave X file behind), then we help with that. If you have a question on the features and functionality of an app itself, it's best to ask the publisher. We attempt to assist where we can with really basic stuff, but with more detailed questions on specific software, it's best to ask the publisher.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yes yes.

Well Thanks for the clarification there John. Some of these apps sites and stuff you pretty much can't get much help, or any at all. And "our" site here, PAc Biggrin is not just active but usually ready willing and able, and even if you can get help at the author or publishers sites it's almost always faster, easier AND more convenient to try here since I get the apps here and I know where the forums are etc. Sorry. Thanks again.

Abiword Portable has all the functions of Abiword non-portable

Same with LibreOffice Portable and LibreOffice. Therefore any info you find online should apply to the portable versions.
Creating a book that you print yourself is still a relatively complex task, especially if you want to include title pages, tables of content, text boxes that flow, page numbers, footnotes and endnotes, and if you want to print two-sided folded pages that have the right page order. And that's not even considering font spacing and kerning, and adding illustrations.
Your best bet is to research book making, and experiment with the software you have.
Remember that Abiword is a lightweight word processor, so it's not a full-featured desktop publishing program - but if your expectations are not too high, it might be enough for you.
Good luck.
