v8 keeps crashing

EDIT - Simply hold the SHIFT key while firefox starts to enter safe mode. Then a window appears to allow disabling of addons. You can also delete bookmarks and login details but this is permanent.

I've just updated to v8 and straight after checking for updates a window appeared saying a script was taking too long to respond and I was asked to continue or cancel. I pressed continue and it happened again but this time it opened and ffx asked if I wanted to enable plugins. Not realising I enabled them all and since then everytime I start ffx it crashes but goes straight the crash report window.

I've tried d/l installer and used menu to reinstall over existing copy but nothing changed. so I then tried updating a copy of a backup and this went the same way. Next I tried opening a backup that hadn't been updated to v8 but this also wouldn't open and kept crashing.

As my ffx is used as default browser, though always started from menu, I realised the common element must be the data kept in my systems 'AppData' folder. After deleting the two ffx folders from Local and Roaming folders, my ffx backup copy then worked.

I also renamed my working ffxportable folder by adding a nought on the end so I could try a fresh install of v8 and this worked too. So it seems its an addon causing the problem.

Is it possible to recover my working copy as it contains many bookmarks and login details that I couldn't possibly remember all of them? My backup is around 8 months out of date but a lot of info could be gotten from this.

Due to having installed and removed loads of themes and addons over the last three years I would like to do a fresh install anyway. But as I said there's a lot of data in the old version. Could I somehow transfer my bookmarks and login data manually from the old ffx install folder/s to the new?

Thanks

Scott

unresponsive script

well this is some problematic story

often one can just copy the whole folder to local hard drive and all will work, as this is often due to the install scripts of the extensions being not so perfect for slow portable drives.

check this here and enter longer values, this might solve the problem

or here the original story to it

Thank you for your reply.

Thank you for your reply. After reading those articles they are pointing out solutions not applicable to me, or should I say that I cannot use that solution.

First of all perhaps I shouldve said that I use only portable software apart from a few select apps like avgfree and novations automap, all of which is used on my laptops internal drive. Portable apps are on drive D with all personal data so its not due to a slow usb stick.

The reason the solution is not applicable is because ffx does not actually start so I can't enter those values. I no longer get the unresponsive script but instead constantly get a crash window.

Any advice on transferring bookmarks and login data?

copy profile?

well all sorts of things can go wrong, but what does happen if you make new installation and copy the profile folder from the old to it?

If you are able to run it in safe mode as John suggests, then the ff itself is ok.

If the problem is then with all the things in profile, then you have to find which one is causing it.

You could also take just the data in form of those sql and json files and to plant them to a new install.
Bookmarks should also have a backup folder with files called bookmarks...'date'

Or go and delete extensions one by one to see which one is giving the problem.

Safe Mode

As always, try safe mode and then disable everything.

John's right. Firefox has a

John's right. Firefox has a safe mode feature that allows you to reset certain parts of your profile that may be causing it to hiccup. I recommend disabling all add-ons, since that seems to have been your problem.

To do this, hit Firefox button -> Help -> Restart with Add-ons Disabled...

This should restart your browser and open a window with check boxes. Check the aspects of the browser that may be causing your problem, and then hit "Continue in Safe Mode" to test it out. If that works out, repeat the steps above and hit "Make Changes and Restart" to make your changes permanent. Smile

If that doesn't solve your problem, you can go the hard and more manual way. Try the links below for backing up and restoring bookmarks and extensions.

Can't Start

He said he can't start it, so he can launch it with FirefoxPortable.exe -safe-mode from the command line.

???

Not sure how to start ffx command line so I googled it. It's actually possible to start ffx in safe mode by simply holding the Shift key whilst launching it.

I disabled all addons and restarted and alls well so I'm now going to try enabling all of them one by one til it crashes.

Thanks for your advice it saved me from reinstalling from scratch Wink

EDIT: Turns out the problem was the ebay sidebar
