Firefox 8.0 portable (localization Italian), using both executables "FirefoxPortable.exe" and ".\App\Firefox\firefox.exe"
> Help menu > About Firefox > shows "Firefox 8.0 [...] channel release"
>> Check Updates > shows "Firefox is updated"
..but release 8.0.1 is avaible on Mozilla servers and portable package is already avaible...

It is better to use the Updater built into the PortableApps.com Menu or check here for updates, then download and install the updated package from here.

8.0.1 is not being pushed out via the Firefox update to local or portable installs unless you use Roboform (and even then I think it just fixes the broken Roboform extension and doesn't update the version). That's the only fix in 8.0.1 on Windows.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
