I have a long-standing issue with Toucan. It affects the latest version, but was also present in at least the two previous versions.
I run differential backups of my PortableApps installation from my USB key to a hard drive on my (Windows 7 64-bit) PC. So every week or so I change the destination folder to force a full backup and each day thereafter a differential to the same folder.
The full backup always completes without issue. The differential backup, however, frequently fails part-way through with a "Toucan has stopped working" message. When I look at the zip file from that backup, sometimes it contains some of the files that should have been backed up, at other times it's of zero length.
The failures always seem to occur during the backing up of cached browser data. It doesn't seem to be specific to any particular browser, though. At various times I've had Google Chrome, Iron and Seamonkey installed on the USB drive and the failures have occurred in backing up files from each of those at one time or another.
As far as I can recall, though, there has never been a failure backing up files from other programmes (including Thunderbird, Filezilla, Pidgin, PopMan and Toucan itself).
Let me know if there's any debug I can run to help to diagnose this.
Regards
Nick
Actually the error message says that 7-Zip standalone console has stopped working - in case that sheds any new light on the problem.

Nick
This problems seems to be getting worse. Pretty much every differential backup now fails so I'm having to do a full backup every day.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Nick
you let me know what version you are using?
Sorry, Steve, meant to include that in the original description. It's 3.0.4.
ok, there were a fair number of changes between that and the latest pre-release. Could you possibly test that too?
Will try it and let you know how I get on.
OK, I downloaded and installed the latest pre-release.
Started Toucan, specified the files to be backed up (my entire P: drive), selected the destination folder (behaviour seems to have changed here - in 3.0.4 if the destination folder didn't exist, Toucan created it but now it throws up an error message). Chose differential (though the destination folder was empty so it should carry out a full backup).
On clicking run I got a "wxWidgets Debug Alert" window. I can't seem to copy and paste the contents but retyping it manually:
..\..\src\common\arrstr.cpp(369): assert "nIndex
In answer to the question as to whether I wanted to stop the program, I answered "No" and the backup did go ahead, and completed normally (though at times it seemed to hang for a while where the older version didn't.
Tomorrow I'll run a differential against that backup to see if it completes without crashing.
In the meantime have you any ideas about the debug message? The installation is completely standard other than the fact that I've installed to a sub-directory called P:\PortableApps\Toucan_3.1.0 rather than just Toucan - so I can keep it separate from my existing 3.0.4 installation.
Forums seems to have truncated the debug information I typed in, for some reason.
If there's some other way for me to capture this and maybe email it to you, let me know.
In the meantime, as you can see from my other posting, the differential backups are still failing.

Nick
Having run the full backup, I then closed Toucan and fired-up Seamonkey - browsing a couple of sites to create some new cache files.
I then closed Seamonkey, opened Toucan and clicked "Run" with the existing settings to create a differential backup.
I got the same "wxWidgets Debug Alert" and again I told it not to stop the programme.
The progress window opened but before it had actually started to back up any files I got the "7-Zip standalone console has stopped working" box.
So it looks as though the problem is still there (plus a new one).
this is very odd, I have been looking into this this afternoon and I get neither the 7zip crash nor the debug alert. It is very odd that it is only failing for certain files and folders too. Is it possible for you to try a backup on a different drive? Also what is the total size that you are trying to back up? I am fairly sure that there is a 4GB limit on the zip file format, which could potentially be an issue.
The USB drive is only 4GB and there are only about 700MB of files on it, so clearly the 4GB limit isn't the issue.
I tried it on my drive D: which is a small partition on the main hard disk of the machine. Still got the debug error, to which I answered "No" to closing the application.
First backup - differential but actually a full backup - completed normally (as it did on the other drive).
I then opened Iron Browser Portable which is installed on that drive, browsed Facebook then cleared the cache in order to change a few files.
I then ran the same backup job again - obviously it was doing a differential this time.
Got the wxWidgets Debug Alert as before, clicked on "No". Crashed almost immediately with the 7-zip standalone console error message, as before.
The basefile.zip is under 220MB so the file size limit isn't relevant.

Any update on this, or is there a debug version I could install to provide further diagnostic information?
afraid there is no news because I can't reproduce this and haven't had a lot of time to look into it. There is a debug version that you could try here:

Hi, same problem here - I get the "7-Zip standalone console has stopped working" error on every differential backup. I believe I get this error since I upgraded from Win XP 32bit to Win 7 64bit. I run Toucan 3.04.
My PortableApps device (USB HDD) as well as my backup USB HDD have plenty of space.
Complete backups work, as does the basefile backup for differential backups. Only subsequent differential backups fail.
I am running 3.1 PR_12 and am getting the same issue. Using Win 7 x64 with SP1. I think I might try installing 7zip separately...
for confirming this, I am going to take a further look at this.
