I'm trying to figure out why my TBP is so slow. I thought it was just a dying, old XP set up. So, I've reinstalled XP completely on a new 160GB IDE 7200 RPM drive, did all express updates and SP2. I am running a Biostar M7VIQ from this millennium (early, though), with 1.256 GB RAM, AMD Athalon 1.67 GHZ processor. I have an AGP Biostar video card with 256MB RAM.
I have current McAfee software kept updated through a university package.
After all that, I copied over my files and retried TBP. It works about the same. I use TBP on my desktop rather than TB because I'm hoping to make it portable.
My TBP has 4 different emails set up in it. The active ones have 100 to 1200 messages in them. I've compacted them after deleting files. I move old emails to "archieve" files within TBP by year. So, those may have a few thousand emails in them. My whole install takes up about 700MB.
I have a standard home DSL connection that works well.
When starting, it may take 1 to 3 minutes to check all emails. To open a message takes about 30-60 seconds. TBP loads relatively quickly, however.
Is TBP inherently slow compared to a regular TB install? Do the amount of emails in the whole install slow useage down? I'd like to understand my problem, then see if there are any suggestions to improve performance. If not, would a regular TB intall help?
I am comitted to being a user of Open Source and I'm really trying. Hopefully, I can give back as I learn. I love your site.

Something else is up with your install. It should be quite fast. I've put my whole 1GB mail store in TBP before on a hard drive and it's just as fast a TB (mostly because it *IS* an unmodified copy of TB in there doing the work).
If you've done the delete and compact stuff... I'd wager your index files are corrupt. For any local mail stores, delete all the .msf files in your mail folders. These just store the indexes of the files and, when corrupt, cause odd things to happen. If you have any IMAP accounts, you can safely delete all the folders and msf files in those accounts (since they just duplicate what's on the server). These can get out of sync and cause odd things to happen.
Backup your profile before playing with all this. Once done, each folder will take a bit to open as TB rebuilds the index. But it should be fine after that.

Thanks, John. Deleted them in all subfolders, TBP started quickly and I navigate through email quickly. A huge, noticeable difference. I've been putting up with this for awhile. Any idea how these files get corrupted? Anything I can do preventatively other than monitor program's performance? Is there anything similar in FFP, it seems a little slower than it should.

Always make sure you eject safely. You can run chkdsk to find and fix corruption.

The only thing I can think of is if you did an unsafe eject. Or if your mailstores themselves are corrupt (which is rare).

I'm running this portable app directly from my hard drive. It was transferred from my flashdrive several weeks ago. I did have inadvertent removals without proper shut down. Could that have caused problems. If so, should I keep profiles folder and reinstall program?
You can install a new copy of TBP right over an existing one without having any impact on your data or settings (it's the in-place upgrade feature).
I can think of anything else causing your issue besides corruption of the actual mailstores, the program or a misbehaving extension. Unless there's an issue with your PC's hard drive.

Well, I ditched my Athlon XP 2000+ set up and built a new computer with a Pentium D 2.8 GHz and 2GB RAM.
My profiles folder is about 630MB.
Under the old Athlon set up, to open an email it took 12-15 seconds after clicking on it. With the Pentium it takes about 5 seconds. This is much better, but still seems slow.
A friend has a Celeron M on a Toshiba laptop with a small email account on Outlook Express. The emails open almost instantly.
More ideas??? Is the slowness from my file size??

I've posted on this before and John H was helpful in providing some ideas. My TBP still seems very slow opening emails. I'm wondering if it is just my hardware. Here's some info:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1GB Memory
Windows XP SP2
Profiles folder is about 600MB
I usually have Firefox open with TBP.
With them both open, my CPU usage is 5% or so. When browsing with Firefox, it may go to 30-50% and have 100% peaks, but you can still move around.
But, when I go to open an unread email message, it takes about 13-15 seconds for it to open, and CPU goes to 100% and nothing else can be done.
John had me delete all *.msf files thinking they may be corrputed. I did that, still the same. I re-installed TBP and still the same.
If I take this flash drive to my office P4 processor 1.67 Ghz, it does not have the same problem at all.
Is this taxing the AMD processor too much? Or is there some weakening/failing hardware? All other programs seem to respond adequately.
