RSSOwl Portable 1.2.3

Here's my first release of RSSOwl Portable and also my first Summer Portables release.
It is available for download at the RSSOwl Portable page.
The launcher is released under the GPL and RSSOwl is licensed under the EPL (Eclipse Public License).
Also, I am fully aware that a RSSOwl Portable is already available, but I wanted to make my own, which is compatible with the PAF.
Thanks,
Ryan.

"Summer Portable"

Sorry, it's just that to me it sounds weird, we're in the middle of winter over here. Anyways, I'll give it a go and let you know how good of a job you did.

Problem

I tried to install, but it just flashed the DOS window and didn't ask for a directory. Moved to a second computer in my office, downloaded a fresh copy and it did the same thing. The file size looks right, but there is no icon associated with the install program. Is there a problem, or is it me?

Looking forward to trying it!

Scott

Well

Are you downloading the copy from Cube Games?
What is your operating system?
Do you have Java installed?
Can you get to the extractor or doesn't that show either?

Problem - continued

Hello,

Yes, downloaded from Cube:
http://portable.cubegames.net/rssowl

All of the operating systems are WindowsXP Pro with SP2 - tried three now. I have administrative privilages on all of them - including domain admin privilages on the two at work (2003 based domain). The home computer is a stand-alone and it does the same thing - just tried it.

The extractor doesn't show. Just briefly flashes a DOS window ... then nothing.

By the way, I'm a HUGE Tom Lehrer fan.

Hmm

I test on XP Home no Service Packs, but I'll try a XP SP2 Pro now.

Edit: I see what you mean now. Try Start » Run » cmd » Then drag the .exe on the screen and press enter.
I get a "Program too big to fit into memory" error. Is this what you get?
I believe it is an error with 7-Zip, maybe I don't have the latest version.

New Math...

Ya, when I was in High School there was a radio programme with a guy that went by "Dr. Demento". That was the 80's. He played novelty music, including Weird Al, about the only one who is still performing.

I was lucky enough to find "An Evening Wasted With", "Revisited" and "That Was the Year That Was" on CDs a few years later. Now they have a home on my iPod where I can revisit any time I want.

Come to think of it, I think I'll be listening to all of them tomorrow at work Wink

Thanks for looking into my install problem, and for the trip down memory lane.

Try

Opening it with 7-Zip File Manager (Right-click » Open Inside). Does that work?

Nope

Does nothing.

Other installers do open in 7-Zip - I downloaded Miranda to look at, and it was fine.

Gimp, FileZilla and VLC Media Player are other individual downloads that I have installed without problems. Could it just be a corrupt install package? I did download at least a few times, to different computers, from two separate ISPs.

Same Problem

I'm having the same problem installing RSSOwl that sfb is having. I'm running WinXP Home SP2. I just get a quick DOS pop-up & that's all. I also tried using 7-Zip, same thing happened.

Program too big to fit in memory

Same thing happens with the Blender package. I have Hexagon and Carrara, but never seem to have the time to learn either well. Portable would make life easier Wink

Hmm

I'm guessing it's a problem with replacing the icons.
I am using ResHacker. John, what do you use?
Anyway, it might not matter, since I might be abandoning RSSOwl Portable, since it needs Java.

But...

But it's still a problem with Blender, and likely the other distributions you created?

I'm not sure Java would be a problem for most people that would use RSSOwl. I have Java installed to the four computers I usually use, and I'm sure many others do as well. Why? OpenOffice. Although OO will operate without Java, not all functionality is there. Okay, I also require it for the administrative console on our corporate firewall, but I'm sure there are other common uses.

Actually

I didn't create Blender Portable, tanisthalon did. Check the credits at the bottom of the page.
I know about the fact that most people have Java, but it you went to an internet cafe and wanted to use it, it might not work.
I'm working on bundling Java with it or a Java look alike at the moment so this issue will be fixed.
I have also decided that I will keep working on RSSOwl Portable. So, don't worry about that issue Biggrin

Same problem...

I'm having the same problem here - quick DOS window and then nothing.
7Zip says it doesn't recognise .paf files.
What IS a .paf file?????

LOL

Haven't got around to it yet. I've been too busy making the support pages. I'll get the MD5s up soon enough, or I might even write a PHP script to generate it on the server side.

Wow!

This is my first time trying RSSOwl and I'm totally impressed!

I just deleted the other RSS application I was using after about 15 minutes of messing around with this one. Can't wait to see what features get added in the future.

Thanks for making it portable.

I actually didn't use it myself, but I found a request and I am now also using it constantly. It keeps me up to speed on any bugs etc Blum

One day later...

well, I've been using it for the past 24 hrs, and so far, everything has been working the way it should be, no problems here. I'll just be using this as my default.

Cool

I'm also interested to hear if people can get it working with a local copy of Java (see the support page: http://portable.cubegames.net/support/rssowl#using ). Any one want to try?
Also, John, is there any chance you could add this to the directory? Thanks.

Regular Updates

I am going to keep this app updated as much as I can with the RSSOwl main version.
Also, a known bug (sorta) is that you can't view PortableApps.com, cause of

Hi Ryan

I tried and failed to use RSSowl with CommonFiles Java.
My Java is 1.6.0.
Do you have a hint or something similar on how to get it working?

Not at the moment

Notice on my current projects page I have RSSOwl Portable (w/Java).
I'll be getting it done when the new version of RSSOwl comes out, which should be soon.
