Errors when launching Toucan 3.1 PR6 / PR7

Hi,

i just tried PR 7 and later PR6.
When i open Toucan Error1 comes:
http://www.abload.de/img/error1z7ar.png

when i select "no" this comes:
http://www.abload.de/img/error2x7uk.png

I tried to run one job and got various more errors.
changing the language of toucan did not help.

i could not find something similar in the latest threads, so i created a new one.
do you need more info?

best regards Smile

Thanks

for letting me know, I have heard a couple of similar reports recently, if you run toucan.exe in App/toucan does it run correctly? Also are you running Windows 7 (it looks like it from your screenshots).

Positive

Yes, the Messages also occur, if i run it from \App\Toucan.
And yes it is Windows 7 x64.
The problem happens on 3 different Systems, private PC, private notebook and work-notebook, each one Win7 x64 SP1
The two private once are German pro and ultimate, the work one is English pro.
Is there something else i could do, to help?

Could

you try deleting anything in the Data directory and trying again? I can't reproduce this and I am somewhat at a loss.

Same problem

I have installed Toucan 3.0.4 for some time, and today I tried adding a rule and it crashes; so I installed 3.1 PRE 7 as said in the forum and it crashes when I open it with the same error that endstille; I have Windows 7 x64 too.

I

am looking into this, but as I (still) cannot reproduce it tracking down the bug is rather difficult! Did this only start with a particular pre-release? If anyone wants to test with the versions available here it might help me track it down.

some progress!

I tried deleting the old Toucan folder before installing and now it doesn't crash! I put back the .ini files one by one, and found that it's the old Jobs.ini file that is causing the crash; I tried deleting some parts of the file and found that when I delete the following lines, Toucan doesn't crash anymore and I have got my jobs back. Hope it will continue to work!

Special characters?

Is there any chance there are any special characters in the path you are running from? Special characters in the path you are backing up/syncing? What else is running on the PC (antivirus, etc)?

well

what i tried to show in the video is, that i just DL Prerelease 6 or 7, unpack it to desktop, so it is a 100% nacked install and it does the same.
i might check on an x86 version, what happens there.
as i've said it happend on my new notebook as well, i just installed VCRuntime 2010 x64 and Office etc. no special software / runtime....

€1: i can provide detailed systeminfo, but as i'm not sure, there is no serial added or something, please add me in jabber or icq or msn, so i send it directly to you.
i prefer jabber: endstille [at] draugr[dot] de thx Smile

€2: just booting my x86 netbook to check fresh install there
€3: it is the same on x86... just loaded PRe7 from your link, extracted to desktop in new folder (no old stuff at all...) and started...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/toucanpre7x86.jpg it even crashes here >_

nope anotherr thing

hi experience something else now.. i installed this wxwidgets (no change here, still reports error).
but then i run as admin (i have UAC enabled!). NO Error. would be my first time without error.
@DEV please try with UAC enabled to default settings.

jet another edit: now i copied my toucan with jobs to desktop und updated this one.
no error, even the jobs work 100% fine.
i'm sure it is related to UAC / RunAsAdmin!

Best regards
Marc

This

is very odd, I do have UAC enabled, could you try running the exe in App/toucan as that bypasses the launcher which could be causing the issue.

update

i just tried PR10, installed it into a fresh folder on my desktop, free of any older userdata and started toucan in \app\toucan\toucan.exe.
a small commandline-window appears for a moment, then toucan is there and crashes with the shown messags.
installing with german or english setup does not change anything.
i'm sorry i don't have good news Sad

I

am really running out of ideas, unfortunately the screenshots in the original post really give me no hints as to what the issue could be. If you hit cancel to ignore the errors does it work correctly?

yes i did

i successfully ran 1 job, then toucan crashed.
i just wonder, why i have this problem on all of my independant systems... it cannot be "one problem" on "my" system (see prior posts)...

edit: isn't it possible to create a debug-build or something?

I

was just creating a debug build actually, I have uploaded it here:

https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/toucan/toucan.exe

Just replace the exe in App\toucan and see how it goes.

I am not sure why you have this problem either, it works fine for me on my Windows 7 64bit development box and on my clean XP virtual machine. It could be I am not doing something exactly the same as you, but as you just get the assert message after double clicking the Toucan.exe file in the root folder I have no idea what it could be.

Install Location

Where do you have Toucan installed an running from (full path)? What language is the OS set to?

i have

- win7x64 hp german, i7, 16gb ram
- win7x64 pro german, core2quad, 8gb ram
- win7x86 hp german, atom, 4gm ram
- win7x64 ulti german, core2duo, 4gb ram
- win7x64 pro english, i5, 4gb ram

Toucan either on Desktop (fresh install) or default= running from Truecrypt-USB Drive.
i'll test debugbuild in the office (english system) and later at home

edit: espacialy system 1 was brand new, when i first reported this behaviour. i got it from acer, configured it for me (no re-installation of win7) and tried toucan.

i can only imagine, there is somehting missing on my systems. nothing else makes any sense to me.

look at the path in pic 1 http://h6.abload.de/img/error1z7ar.png
C:\programming... nothing i ever had. i also installed the metiones tool there, but it did not solve the problem.

Standard Install

Could you do a standard install to say C:\PortableApps\Toucan. *Not* running inside a TrueCrypt drive (which can cause issues with some apps) or running from the Desktop directory (which can also cause issues with some apps). We're trying to narrow down the exact issue and need to eliminate both of those.

yes

i just installed PR10 to C:\PortableApps\Toucan and started, the error occurs immidiatly.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/toucan1.png
-> "06:25:39: Can't create thread (error 8: not enough storage is available to process this command.)
06:25:39: Can't set thread priority (error 6: the handle is invalid.)

06:25:39: Can't set thread priority (error 6: the handle is invalid.)
06:25:39: Cannot resume thread 0 (error 6: the handle is invalid.)
"

infact my harddrive is also encryted, but it cannot be the problems. i only encrypt my notebooks, but the PC has the same issue..

running toucan debugbuild from here: C:\PortableApps\Toucan\App\Toucan\toucan.exe
give me this error within no time: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/toucandebug1.png

i tested PR's to see where it starts:
PR1: Does not start, gives me another error, but under the splash, which does not disappear so cannot see error. (in alt-tab i can see it very small, looks different than the searched one.

PR2: Opens without Splash.. Error occurs Sad
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/toucan2.png
"06:39:54: Can't create thread (error 8: not enough storage is available to process this command.)
06:39:54: Can't set thread priority (error 6: the handle is invalid.)
06:39:54: Can't create thread (error 8: not enough storage is available to process this command.)
06:39:54: Can't set thread priority (error 6: the handle is invalid.)
06:39:54: Can not resume thread 0 (error 6: the handle is invalid.)"

i can only advise, please check your changelog in PR2, i started there, or invisible in PR1 already.

Ok

so I have done a pile of research into this, and I think I know what is causing this, but I have no idea why on your particular systems. Basically one of the controls that I use is quite heavily threaded and I think you are running out of thread handles. So I have created another version of Toucan that replaces it with a different control you can get it here: https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/toucan/toucan.exe

Could you test it again for me? Thanks!

hoohoohooooi tested it ...

hoohoohoooo
i tested it ... no more errors.
I'll do further testing, running jobs etc. but the error never kept me waiting, so... i think you got it Smile
i'll edit further results here.

edit: thats a minor thing, but on 2 of 3 starts i got this:
20:09:49: can't open file 'C:\Users\marc\Desktop\Toucan\App\toucan\bitmaps\undo.png' (error 2: das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.)
20:09:49: Failed to load image from file "C:\Users\marc\Desktop\Toucan\App\toucan\bitmaps\undo.png".
20:09:49: can't open file 'C:\Users\marc\Desktop\Toucan\App\toucan\bitmaps\redo.png' (error 2: das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.)
20:09:49: Failed to load image from file "C:\Users\marc\Desktop\Toucan\App\toucan\bitmaps\redo.png".

also it has nothing to do with the topic!
Edit2: still works fine. is there a way to skip the skipped message? i would like to see only changes, as it was in 3.0.4 Smile

How?

Any idea how he could be running out of thread handles and, if so, how we could check for that? Some other misbehaving app? If it's happening on all PCs he has, it's likely something specific he is running.

I Know It Is

The thing is, this is not normal behavior. And is indicative of some malfunctioning software on the system. Something other than Toucan. There should be tons of threads available. So, what do these systems have in common? Some antivirus? Some encryption app? Some messaging app? Something else running?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

common

hmmm, i can't think of something, every system has in common... the harddisk of my pc is not encrypted so no truecrypt here and the work-notebook has a different anti-virus.
maybe it is related to truecrypt, as my USB drive is encrypted, so TC is always running.
i'll test tomorrow evening.
but it is a must for me, so if it would be the reason i cannot update toucan.
and my question if i can skip the skip messages is quite real. i have a folder with ca. 2000 files, that i synchronize every day. now i cannot see anymore, what has been done there, as only 5-20 files change, so i would have to search 10 messages in 2000 skipped... :s

TrueCrypt

Could you try running the version of Toucan which you have had problems with (not this fixed copy) on one of those PCs without TrueCrypt running, please? If it works, then we can confirm a major bug in the copy of TrueCrypt you are running. It is likely to affect additional apps as well, not just Toucan, as lots of cross-platform apps (like Toucan and TrueCrypt) use threads on PCs even though PCs don't handle threads well.

on my working notebook i can

on my working notebook i can agree, there are maaaany threads in the "bugged" version
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/bugged.png (the picture was done immidiatly after launching toucan. then the error occurs and most of the threads are gone.

here the working one.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/working.png
It has ran for some minutes at this point.
i'll grad the notebook of my colleagues now (no truecrypt at all) and check both version.

i'm sorry but..

same situation on this machine, "working" one creates some threads and works just fine...
"bugged" one creates many many threads and gets stopped then.
i've run both from his harddrive d:\toucan\working and ..\bugged. no truecrypt has ever seen this machine. i can't tell anything, that we really have in common, except win7 and office2010 etc...

however my impression is, that the problem is, that the threads are not working well, so there are new ones over and over again. during my testing with RC7 i had it working for some hours when i ran it as admin... so it should also be no pure-basic problem on the machines.
i still think you have installed something, that we don't have...
another one in the forums had the same problems, didn't he? was in the comments at the beginning.

Edit: here:
Same problem
bobby212 - October 28, 2011 - 4:10pm

I have installed Toucan 3.0.4 for some time, and today I tried adding a rule and it crashes; so I installed 3.1 PRE 7 as said in the forum and it crashes when I open it with the same error that endstille; I have Windows 7 x64 too.

Edit2: the highest number of threads i could count were 170..
and i can say neither me nor my colleage have recognized problems with any other application. and we are quite powerusers Biggrin

Ok

so I have another version for you to use, hopefully this will keep the control uses by the other pre-releases, but not create threads in huge numbers. Link is the same as ever:

Thanks for all your help tracking this down Smile

Hmmm, thats a little bit odd..
i can start toucan normaly, waitet some seconds..
not more than 17 threads.
i started a sync-job and got 19threads (so 2 more).

all went well, but once it finshed..
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12896017/Pics/strange.png

you're welcome Wink

EDIT:i forgot: i clicked cancel at the messagebox, then toucan was closed by windows (not reacting anymore)

pr11 solved the problem, but...

soooo, as the subject says, the specified problem is gone.
however, i think it is more like a work-around.
for example if i close PR11, it takes something less then 10 seconds.
i can see threads getting opened and closed then. so you successfully limited the the thread number and therefore killed the crash-reason.
but it does not work as smart as 3.0.4.
i'm sorry i cannot be more detailed.

that was my fault, I have fixed the slow shutdown and it'll be in the next (pre-)release.
