SUITE!! thanks JOhn

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss

sorry man but that was purely horrible of a pun, it was funny because it was bad.

When I port my set of PortableApps from a pendrive to an other it takes some 40-50 minutes (!!) even if it goes first to a HD. (The whole thing is 1,5 GB - may it be huge, these amount of movie data for instance transfers within 1 - 3 minutes.)

This is because the
LibreOfficePortable\App\libreoffice\Basis\program\resource\
directory holds more than 7500 (seven thousand five hundred)files and it is a burden for USB flash memory devices to open and close files one by one.
So the LibreOfficePortable application is not so portable.
Is there any means to ease this?

Regards guys

Zip up the LibreOfficePortable before copying. Then you are only copying one big file. When it's on the new location, unzip. That might work faster.

Do you copy them so often?
I rarely do it and so it doesnt bother me that much, especially, as there isnt much one can do about LibreOffice having SO much files.
Zipping them up might be an option, but I have no idea if its really faster in the end.

Download and install of LOP shouldn't take 40 minutes. You could move your platform (minus LOP and maybe other large apps), and then do a re-install of the biggies. It might even be faster, if you are doing this often, to download the installer to your hard drive first, instead of using the AppUpdater.

Most average flash drives are bad with lots of little files. The only way to improve it is either to buy a better flash drive (best option) or to use a virtual drive on your flash drives so all the little writes end up as one bigger write. You can use TrueCrypt to do this somewhat. There are a couple utilities that also do this a little better (can't recall which offhand). Note that the TrueCrypt or utility solution will render your drive incompatible with any PC that you don't have Administrative rights on. Using ExFAT as your file system may improve performance a bit as well, but it similarly will render your flash drive incompatible with most Windows XP machines and most machines of other operating systems.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thx for the answers.

1. Often copying: may it be silly but I use PortableApps on new PC-s - no install of ten or so apps, I copy only the PortableApps dir for the new user. This occurs not very often - once a month, so the "whole lotta files" phenomenon bothers me once a month.

2. Zipping: the phenomenon occurs when unzipping.

3. Reinstall: may it be silly but I use some proprietary settings in LOP (some macros, keyboard assignments etc.) which tend to disappear even at overinstall (update). This is not because of the Portable repackage but the inconsistence of the LO itself. ("Tend to": there are versionsteps which are rude with the former... In genereal not the new things are the most interesting in new LO versions but those oldies that left out without a word.)

Thx again I'm wiser than before.

If (1), then Unzipping shouldn't be an issue. In fact, if it's only during setup of PC's then your flash drive is just a sneakernet conduit - just a way of getting the files onto the PC. In that case, why not go from an install on a PC ->zip->flash drive->new PC->unzip? (2) Then all the zipping and unzipping is done on PC's, where presumably it's not a problem, and you are only copying one big file onto and off of the flash drive? That would also allow you to reserve your special config. (3)
You could also use a VPN, or your home network with Windows Remote Access to copy the files and leave the flash drive out of it entirely.
