Release Notes:

PicPick Portable 3.1.7 Development Test 1 (2012-08-07)

  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.
  • Use of PortableApps.com Launcher 2.2 and PortableApps.com Installer 3.0.4

PicPick Portable 3.1.6 Development Test 1 (2012-06-22)

  • I have added the Bosnian language. However, this language in the platform will be used only, when there is a corresponding translation of the Bosnian language. Thus, the integration of the Bosnian language currently has no effect in the platform.
  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.

PicPick Portable 3.1.5 Development Test 2 (2012-05-22)

  • After an upgrade in the PortableApps.com Menu the message box named "Program Options" appears at the first start of the app, in which the user must manually disable the checkboxen next to "Run Program at Startup" and "Check for program updates". By the a new section [FileWrite3] inside the file PicPickPortable.ini I have eliminated this failure. Therefore the above described message box now not appears at the first start of the app in conjunction with an upgrade.

PicPick Portable 3.1.5 Development Test 1 (2012-05-19)

  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.

PicPick Portable 3.1.4 Development Test 1 (2012-04-21)

  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.

PicPick Portable 3.1.3 Development Test 1 (2012-03-23)

  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.
  • Especially I added the Hebrew language by an appropriate entry within the section [LanguageStrings] in the file PicPickPortable.ini

PicPick Portable 3.1.2 Development Test 2 (2012-02-12)

  • I have adapted the file EULA.txt. At the beginning of this file I have pasted the following information: Important note: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY).
  • In addition I changed the file picpick.ini. Thus it is no longer necessary for the user, that he need to disable the both checkboxes next to "Run Program at Startup" and "Check for program updates" in the dialog window "Program Options", when PicPick is run at the first time.

PicPick Portable 3.1.2 Development Test 1 (2012-02-11)

  • Regarding the changes please look at the section What's new.
  • Important note: At the first start of the program will be display the dialog window "Program Options". Please disable in this dialog window the two Ckeckboxen next to "Run Program at Startup" and "Check for program updates".

PicPick Portable 3.1.1 Development Test 4 (2012-02-10)

  • It must be displayed to the user a dialog window named "Program Options" immediately after the installation (at the first run of the program). This dialog window contains the following necessary information: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY). The user should disable in this dialog window the two Ckeckboxen next to "Run Program at Startup" and "Check for program updates".

PicPick Portable 3.1.1 Development Test 3 (2012-02-04)

  • I have revised the code in the file installer.ini. Additionally I have pasted a new file named "PortableApps.comInstallerCustom.nsh" in the folder Other\Source. Due to these alterations the user can further use his previously installed version of PicPick in case the file "picpick_inst.exe" is not available for downloading (because it has been updated, renamed, moved on the server etc.). Thank you at prapper, because he has offered me the necessary code for the realization of this feature.

PicPick Portable 3.1.1 Development Test 2 (2012-02-01)

  • I have added the missing tagline in the file help.html. Also I have corrected a false entry in the section [LanguageStrings]. Finally I have pasted a new section [FileWrite2]. Due to this section an user can work with an external image editor without the necessity to alter the program settings after moving to another PC.

PicPick Portable 3.1.1 Development Test 1 (2012-01-31): Initial release

  • Use of an online installer
  • automatic language switching in the PortableApps.com Platform, in the standalone version change of the language via left click of program icon in system tray -> click on "Program Options..." -> choose the language in the section "Language"

Permission of NTeWORKS:

Because the program PicPick is only Freeware (i.e. no Open Source software), I have sent a request at the developers of PicPick. Due to this request I have got now a permission regarding the development of a portable version. Here is the content of this permission.

Addendum to the permission:

In a further e-mail I have clarified some problems with the developers of PicPick. In particular can remain the button "Make a Donation" in the file "help.html". However, it must be displayed to the user a dialog window named "Program Options" immediately after the installation (at the first run of the program). This dialog window contains the following necessary information: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY). To realize that, I have implemented this feature in the version PicPick Portable 3.1.1 Development Test 4. Here is now the complete Addendum to the permission.

Nice, works like a charm. It came out clean on WinXP SP3 admin, language switching works as well.

Great app

Had never see this before, but it replaces a few other things I was using, all in one package.

A few suggestions for your package:

  • You forgot to add a tagline in help.html
  • It would be nice to have platform drive changes handled for picpick.ini for those of us who would like to set GIMP Portable or any of the other portable image editors that are here as the default image editor for screenshots

some interesting features

I'll add the missing tagline in help.html at the next update of PicPick.

I also have thought about the handling of the change of the platform drive letter. But I think it's impossible. The reason is the fact, that in the file picpick.ini exists no entry wit path informations. And the creation of an individual line with path informations is surely pointless, because the program can't process such an entry.

Below I would like to draw your attention to some interesting features of PicPick. For more detailed informations you should have a look at the website PicPick Online Help. And if you have not problems with the german language, then I can deeply recommend you the website Screenshots mit PicPick.

Below I would like to indicate some very interesting features of PicPick.

  • A very nice feature is "Capture Scrolling Window", which can be used for a screenshot of a complete browser window. For more information please have a look at the Video Tutorial Step 7.
  • For the transfer of screenshots on your website via FTP you get more information on the website How to Upload images via FTP.
  • You can also share your images through on the web via ImageShack. For detailed informations look at Step 5 - Step 7 of the tutorial How to Start.

I have studied very intensively in the past the program GIMP. But the above described features you will not find in GIMP. GIMP is of course a top image editor. But the areas of application of the GIMP and PicPick are completely different. PicPick has specialized primarily on the professional production and subsequent processing of screenshots.

You can define an external

You can define an external program to send the capured picture to for further editing, that's the whole point of such feature.
You have to add the in the parameter box for it to work or else no file is passed to the external app.
GimpPortable for instance works fine and appears in the picpick.ini once defined.
The setting creates following entries:

ExternalProgramPath=X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMPPortable.exe
ExternalProgramParameter=

very interesting information

Surely I must paste these 2 lines in the section [Setting] of the file "picpick.ini" or? And then I also must paste in the file "PicPickPortable.ini" the following section:

[FileWrite1]
Type=Replace
File=%PAL:DataDir%\picpick.ini
Find=%PAL:LastDrive%%PAL:LastPackagePartialDir%
Replace=%PAL:Drive%%PAL:PackagePartialDir%

This won't work.

The way I read it, LastPackagePartialDir refers only to the currently running app, so you are trying to find "X:\PortableApps\PicPickPortable" in a string that says "X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMPPortable.exe".

Just handle the drive letter. It won't help when you move PicPick and/or GIMP, but that is something people will just have to deal with themselves.

good info

Indeed you have right. I'll now update PicPick with an additional section [FileWrite2]:

[FileWrite2]
Type=Replace
File=%PAL:DataDir%\picpick.ini
Find=%PAL:LastDrive%
Replace=%PAL:Drive%

Also I have added the missing tagline and I have corrected the false entry in the section [LanguageStrings].

You can use relative paths

If you go into the Options, set the external program path to
..\..\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMPPortable.exe
and add the parameter of as depp.jones suggested.
That's all I did, and it works fine. This should also mean that it won't care about the drive letter. No need to manually edit the ini file.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

important supplement

Thank you for this advice. As a second alternative you can also choose an absolute path into Program Options... -> Auto Save. But a very important supplement is the fact, that you first must go into Program Options... -> Capture. In the section "Output Type" you must choose the entry "External Program".

Regarding the drive letter topic I 've the same attitude like you.

drive letter topic

I must correct my view in relation to the drive letter topic. Through the choice of an external program via Program Options... -> Auto Save will be created an entry in the section [Setting] of the file picpick.ini (e.g. ExternalProgramPath=X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\GIMPPortable.exe). As I mentioned in my reply regarding the comment of depp.jones, it's necessary to paste a section [FileWrite1] in the file PicPickPortable.ini.

Therefore I'll now update PicPick.

relative path is the solution

Your idea with a relative path is the correct and only solution. Only in this case is guaranteed, that after moving to another PC all works fine. My idea with an absolute path in conjunction with a section [FileWrite2] don't work. Though I can't understand the reason for that problem. The previous entry at the key "ExternalProgramPath" won't be adapted. But why not????

Relative is do-able, but not accessible for most users

The problem is, most users won't manually insert a relative path, but will use the file browser to select the application, which inserts an absolute path.

new determination of image editor necessary

If the user does not use relative paths, then he has no other choice as to determine the path to the image editor new in the file browser after moving to another PC. In the moment I can't offer a better solution.

Read my comment above in

Read my comment above in reply to your FileWrite section.

Just implement PAL:LastDrive to PAL:Drive, but not PAL:LastPackagePartialDir to PAL:PackagePartialDir. This should fix it.

Nice app.Triggers W7 UAC when changing background to solid color

Looks like a really nice utility. I find the checkerboard background a bit distracting so I tried changing the background to a solid color. It triggers a Windows 7 UAC prompt when I hit Apply to save the set color. (Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit).

Hi tapsklaps, as a follow up

Hi tapsklaps,

as a follow up of yesterday's topic - have you considered another attempt to contact wiziple (or NTeWORKS)? Despite his rejection (ff) he might possibly change his mind, especially as he changed the licensing and ditched the toolbar installer. Maybe if you point out the advantages like the publicity boost, the possibility to team up with PA.c or to host the package on his own site as an alternate portable version if he likes etc.
Could be worth the try, especially as PicPick would be such a useful addition to the app directory.

request at Wiziple per Email

A few hours ago I have sent an inquiry via email to Wiziple. In this email I have also pointed at the advantage regarding the level of awareness of PicPick, which will be increased by such a release. Now I can only hope that the developers of PicPick have changed their former negative attitude. If I get a positive answer, then I could of course also point out that a cooperation with PA.c would be possible or the package could be hosted on the website of Wiziple.

Caution

The terms as stated may exclude the standard PortableApps.com donation button from help.html; the wording (they could be referring to the process of the installer or the contents of the installer, viz. what is installed) is not clear (it's probably best to ask for clarification).

Also make sure that you set the correct values in [License] and ensure you show their EULA (I haven't looked to see if you have).

Hi tapsklaps, that's great

Hi tapsklaps, that's great news! Now that the developer has agreed to a portable version you could ditch the online installer switch to packaging the app.
I have some thoughts on displaying the message box "FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY)". The way it is now relies on user action to make it portable. That sould be avoided imho.
As I understood the response, displaying a message box would meet the requirements. This could alternatively be done by the installer with custom code, but I think that had to be adjusted to enable silent installing by the updater once it becomes official.
Or you could display a message box on every launch but that might be a bit overkill.
If this eventually becomes official, the message could somehow be integrated in the splash screen and until then, a message box could be used. I think that option would be the most elegant way because it would remind the user on every start but does not cause annoyance.

For the dev test, a second splash could be displayed with custom code to circumvent the need to press a button every time.

EULA Change?

Is the publisher happy with the "Important Note: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY)" on the EULA? It seemed that they wanted it shown on first run (in addition to the user needing to agree to the EULA). If the publisher still desires this, we can do it with custom code and a quick messagebox on first run, storing whether it has been shown in the launcher settings ini in Data\settings.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

message box on first run

Since the insertion of the phrase "Important Note: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY" in the EULA I have not again contacted the developers of PicPick. Therefore I don't know, if they are agree with this solution. Personally I am of the opinion that the variant with the insertion of a messagebox at the first start is better, because it is clearer and more transparent. But unfortunately I do not know, how I should write the appropriate custom code. If I understood you correctly, then this custom code should be stored in the folder Data\settings.

I also think that the publisher desires this message box at the first start.

contact with the developers

Once again I have contacted the publisher of PicPick regarding the problem with the message box. And as I mentioned in my earlier message, the developer would desire that in a separate window the message "Important Note: FOR HOME USER (PERSONAL USE ONLY)" appears (because of the clarity for the user). On the other hand the developer has not explicitly decided against my previous solution.

In summary I would welcome it, if with custom code is displayed an additional messagebox. Can you offer me the appropriate custom code?

not relevant

I suppose, that it's not important for the publisher, wether the app will offered about a bundle or an online installer. Is there a particular advantage to use a bundle instead of an online installer?

Possibility of archiving

I have been thinking about the creation of a bundle instead of an online installer. One advantage may be the creation of an archive for the application in case of a bundle. Therefore some users can revert to an older version if they wished. Is this the main reason of your question or are there also other motives?

Bundle

Most people seem to prefer the non-online installer. Honestly, it's cheaper for us to do a live installer since we pay for all the freeware bandwidth.

Pro and con regarding a bundle

Of course is for the decision, whether to offer a bundle or not, the point of view of great importance.

From the perspective of Portableapps.com of course the cost factor is a contra regarding the offering of a bundle.

However for the user the use of a bundle has the advantage, that he can go back to an older version in the event of a faulty update. Of course the user could also create a backup of the old folder AppnamePortable, but the use of an old installer is just more convenient. It's a little difficult to find an optimal decision for all participants in such a situation Sad

download link removed

As the member winterblood has already mentioned, I have used an online installer in this offered version. Unfortunately, the publisher has removed the appropriate download link a few days ago. But you have certainly noticed, that now this program is available as an official release on PortableApps.com. In this offered version no online installer is used, so that this issue you described do not appear in the future.
