Redistributing the Java Runtime

Two questions:

  1. Can I distribute the Java Runtime with RSSOwl Portable? I know it can be distributed but I don't know about OS projects.
  2. Is the Java Runtime portable?

Sorry if these questions seem stupid but I suck with licensing (as John knows ;)) and it's late at night.

Practice makes perfect!

note: Seems to use a sessionid. If that link doesn't work, go to the J2SE DL page and click the license link.

Maybe / Kinda / Hosting

The answer to 1 is a maybe. Some apps seem to be doing it. And I've chatted with Sun about the possibility of distributing it with apps. I may be able to get a more definitive answer.

As to 2, the answer is kinda. Some apps just need to be pointed at the javaw.exe and they'll work. Others not so much. I'm working on a way to standardize Java's location and use within the PortableApps Menu.

You also need to think about hosting/bandwidth, though. Since Java is closed, you can't host Java binaries on SourceForge. You can do some smaller runtimes that are included with newer OSes but not older ones (like the MS VC++ runtimes) but not the JVM (I confirmed this with SourceForge's higher-ups). And, since Java is over 50mb, you're looking at a lot of bandwidth to host it when you start getting a few thousand downloads (which you will when you move in here).

I'm considering paying for a second server for downloads on a host with cheaper bandwidth than SourceForge for stuff like this. I'd be spending donation/ad money, which wouldn't be as bad as donations have picked up a bit since the release of the suite.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hmm

Well, it's really not that necessary, but to be listed at Portable Freeware, it can't rely on anything, plus it's not really that portable.
Yes, that includes RSSOwl, it just needs to be pointed at the Java directory then it opens bin\javaw.exe inside it. Oh and I already have 149 downloads for the first couple of days which seems pretty fair.

WRT another server, you could use Amazon S3 which we were going to do (and are still doing if Rene gets around to it) with Libertà.
