GIMP Portable 2.7.4 Pre-Release 3

Application: GIMP
Category: Graphics & Pictures
Description: GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Download GIMP Portable 2.7.4 Pre-release 3 [35.5MB download / 119.1-187.5MB installed]
(MD5: 5883fd6ddb2f0ed395760b20b634cbdd)

Release Notes:
Development Test 1 (2012-02-08):

  • Initial release

Development Test 2 (2012-02-10):

  • Now works on 32-bit systems

Development Test 3 (2012-02-14):

  • Updated app icon to reflect that this is a development version. This helps distinguish from the stable version when both shown side-by-side. (ie., searching for "gimp" in platform)
  • Did a line-by-line walkthrough of GIMPPortableU.nsi and ported all custom bits to the PAL launcher

Notes:

  1. This a pre-release of the GIMP 2.7.4 (unstable branch) using PAL. If this works as expected, and it appears to do so in my testing, the same will likely be done to the stable branch, currently sitting at 2.6.12
  2. As this is an unstable version of GIMP, the base app developers have a commandline window that pops up. Minimize it, or not. Just don't close it. I can't hide this window using PAL, or the splash screen doesn't show up for some reason. You'll need to close the window manually after closing the main GIMP window. IF anyone knows how to do this with code, I'd appreciate the help.

Single Window?

Does this version have the single window mode expected to and in the stable 2.8 branch?

Yep

I don't have my computer in front of me ATM, but I believe it's under the Window menu.

DT 1 feedback

Won't launch for me on Win7 Pro 32-bit.

When selecting the application from the menu, GimpPortableTest.exe appears in Task Manager then disappears without any error or splash.

Launching GimpPortableTest.exe from the folder has same result.

Couldn't find an executable that would work in the GimpPortableTest\App\Gimp folder to test the base app.

It's in the bin

It's in the bin directory.

Thanks for the report, I'll try to fix it in my 32-bit VM

Error

Error message stating

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check you computer system infromation to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

Is this the 64-bit version?

Can verify this on 32-bit Win

Can verify this on 32-bit Win XP Pro SP3.

I also get

GIMPPath\gimp-2.7.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

When run from the base executable.

64-bit Version

If you used the GIMP installer under a 64-bit Windows, it installed the 64-bit-only version of GIMP. You need to install under 32-bit Windows to get the proper binaries.

Done

Ok, I installed in a 32-bit VM, I've got the files, fixing now. Are we going to stick with the 32-bit version only, as is our custom?

Updated to 1.4.0 PR2

See release notes for details.

Developers, please pay close attention to Note #2. I'd appreciate insights.

DT2 Feedback

Works for me on Win7 32-bit though needs to be run as admin. If not the "GimpPortableTest.exe" appears and disappears from Task Manager after a second without the splash appearing.

When run as admin, Gimp successfully launches. Remembers Single-window mode on close and re-open.

Successfully installed over the top of DT1.

EDIT: The single window mode just makes Gimp seem that much better. I know it's only an aesthetic change but seriously when there are so many options and tools, any improvement in the UI provides a notable benefit to the entire application experience.

Thanks for this

Since GIMP is not too far away from releasing 2.8 (knock wood), I'm glad you are working on this - it appears that it's changed enough from 2.6.x to cause some issues, so at least this can help work them out. I hope that it makes the 2.8 release easier to configure.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Appeared to run ok on Win7 64 bit notice lots of failure to load files warning in the command line windows. Not sure if that is supposed to be or not. Can not get a copy and paste of them but do have some mht screenshots if you want to see them.

Have not dug too deep into your coding, however I believe you are launching with Python.exe from the Python folder, try using Pythonw.exe as the launcher.
Not sure if that is what you wanted?

Shouldn't be

That directory shouldn't be created at all. Not sure why it is. I'll look into it, and get it fixed ASAP.

[EDIT] I can't duplicate this. Can you please zip up the contents of your Data, Other\Source & App\Appinfo folders for me, please?

Release?

Gord, if you're happy with this, I'd like to release this as GIMPPortableTest 2.7.4 and push it out via the updater. As it's a Test build, it is ok if there are still a couple minor issues with it.
