any boot iso to boot usb?

Now I have the chance to use bootable sticks on my new netbook.
So I start getting interested if there is meanwhile any generic way to make any bootable iso to a bootable usb fast and simple way?

Unetbootin

Assuming that you mean Linux distros, this works very well:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

I don't know if it works with anything else.

Mandriva Seed: No go

An update: I tried using Mandriva Seed, which will install most things on a USB drive.
However, I am using a user account on Windows 7, and it does not detect the USB drives. So Mandriva Seed is not an option.

+1 for unetbootin. Additional

+1 for unetbootin.

Additional information:
Fedora has its own USB stick installer, windows based, that allows you to create a file for storing changes on, nice.

SimplyMepis (debian based) comes with its own system.

I believe that ubuntu has a similar live USB creator included.

I'm hoping to move over to fedora when I get some time to make a dedicated effort, though I used to use mepis. Its decent, but IMHO learn a full grand os, or don't bother. Mepis is to skinny for my tastes, though its what I started on.

unetbootin one thing

but I had on mind something more generic allowing me to make number of utils, some bootable CD I made myself from floppies and similar.
I had look at this unetbootin, but it seems to be only for the CD in its list, like linux distros etc.
Even this, tried to do parted magic with it, this failed, the internal usb builder of the parted magic was more successful.

I was thinking I could make some hiren CD into a stick by some fast method, but it looks like this will need to be done 'by hand' still.

If you're using some version

If you're using some version of Hiren's, there is a USB installer here:

http://www.hirensbootcd.net/usb-booting.html

You might be able to use that.

Unetbootin does work with a lot of disks that aren't on its supported list. The list is those that it can download itself automatically. The program is able to install almost any Live-CD out there, if you have an ISO.

Please make unetbootin

Please make unetbootin portable. I know it is already portable. But it would be nice if it could be update itself automatically with PortableApps.com platform.

Thank you!

as you know

it needs admin rights, so you can use it on your home computer only, so no big advantage to try to have it portable.

about admin rights

Why we can not make apps which use admin rights?

When I right click on an app (which is on the PortableApps.com Platform list), I can see "run as administrator" option. So?

is seldom makes sense

Yes there is this entry, but it is then for progtrams which anyway can not be be used portably. So why to bother?

If the only way you can use a program is on your own private computer at home, then why does it need to be in some special portable form?

Few things like some defrag program are made portable, even also here the use is not so clear as again, it can be used only on your home computer.

Unetbootin, well it is just one exe, needs to be placed somewhere on suitable drive, best on half empty data partition, place the iso next to it and start producing the bootimage.
The problem when run from an usb stick is that it will try to create the bootable stick of what it finds and if one is not careful enough, his nice portable apps stick is overwritten with what ever.

So the real use is, remove any other usb sticks apart from the one you want to be overwritten.

So this particular program is not very wise to be run portable.
I have a copy of it on my stick, but when it comes to use it, I copy that to local drive, remove my portable apps stick and first then I start playing with unetbootin.

Here's another one that I've used

I've used Unetbootin before, and while it is good, I ran across this gem browsing new additions to Majorgeeks.com. It's called YUMI or Your Universal Multiboot Installer. Here is the download page at Majorgeeks.com. YUMI's home page is at http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/.

There are two things I really like about this program:

1.) It lists a bunch of linux distro's and utility ISO's like Hiren's, as well as providing a way to download them if needed.

2.) It will allow you to put more than one iso on a thumb drive, using a menu to choose which one you want to run. It will even attempt to integrate an ISO that it doesn't directly support.

I am, in no way, affiliated with the maker of YUMI. I am simply a fan of the program, and wanted to share. Smile

Can YUMI put the Windows iso file inside USB?

Windows ISO

It can run a Windows Vista or 7 install iso from the menu, yes. If you mean running a full Windows from the USB, no.

Correct

As Vandrvekn states, the only OS's that can be run with YUMI is a "live" iso. As there is no "official" live version of windows, it cannot be done (at least not legally).
