Ffx leaves files on pc when set as default browser

Both Ffx and Tbird leave files on the pc if used as default browser/mail app. I want them kept as default but wondered why they create these files and leave them in the system.

Is it a Mozilla problem/function/issue?

Will this be sorted when file associations are added to the menu?

Its not really a problem its just annoying because I imagine due to these files being left it causes a default Ffx/Tb settings to be loaded if the apps aren't running and I open a html file/link or create new email.

I always have to start the app then open link for browser/email.

Can this be sorted out?

Thanks

Unsupported, Better Way

Setting them as default within the app itself will set Firefox within Firefox Portable (NOT Firefox Portable itself) as the default browser. This has never been supported and is not supported by any portable apps.

Both Firefox and Thunderbird support setting a default mail and browser handler internally via either mimetypes or within about:config. You can use that to set the default mail handler to ThunderbirdPortable.exe within Firefox and FirefoxPortable.exe within Thunderbird. The path will be adjusted by the launcher as you move PCs. Additional MIME types (like PDFs opening in SumatraPDF) work fine as well. This is has been supported for years.

For file associations now, you can use eXpresso or Portable File Associations. It will be built into the menu shortly.

Thank you for your reply John

Thank you for your reply John I'm eagerly awaiting file association but I won't ask how long it'll be

I don't actually have a clue what mimetypes are! I'll do a bit of research...

Are you saying that within each apps settings they can set a specific app as default without using the options/set as default? If so what is about:config? is it a settings file within their respective folders which needs manual editing?

Thanks for your help

Could you please clarify how

Could you please clarify how this works please John, I've looked for Mimetypes and am no wiser as to how this works?!

Also, what is this file you mention that default can be set within about:config? I can find no such file or setting?

Thanks

Might help?

In firefox to set default mail client click tools >>options>>applications>>mailto>>other>>browse to location of Thunderbird.

For Thunderbird:

Navigate to "Tools> Options> Advanced" in the Thunderbird menus and click on the "Config Editor" button.
Search for the following three entries:
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https
network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp
Set the value of each of these three entries to true (you can do this by double-clicking on each entry, then close the "about:config" window and click "OK" on the "Thunderbird Preferences" window).

Having completed these steps, the next time you click on an http, https or ftp link in Thunderbird, you will be presented with the "Launch Application" window. Press the "Choose" button on this window to select your browser of choice. This will add the required entry to the mimeTypes.rdf file. This is a one-time task; having selected the browser once, links of the same type will now always be opened with the selected browser.

Er, sorry is that a thanks?

Er, sorry is that a thanks? for what? or a sarcastic remark? If you say I should use Google instead of this forum, I did try that but perhaps my wording wasn't right but it came up with nothing helpful. And as I didn't know if the problem was app or launcher I tried here. Sorry...

Thank Google

He meant thank Google since that is how he found the info for you. It was a joke.
