Initial Observations

Pyro, you sure did this quick - thank you again! You might suggest this app to your GTD-Free users to get more testers. Just a thought...

I haven't tried it on a second machine yet. I thought I'd give it a good once-over on a single system first.

Comodo Personal Firewall complains that TUPortable (TUP from now on) wants complete control of explorer.exe & also javaw.exe. I don't know if that would cause a problem trying to run on accounts with restricted privileges or not. I do have jPortable installed as well as Java on this system so I'm not sure which is being used or how to tell. Obviously TUP runs on Java! Are you using the jPortable Launcher somehow? I also have it installed.

First run does not get you the normal Welcome/Config screens to step-through. New users may not realize that settings is something they should look through - other than the European little-endian date being a clue!

It looks like you're moving the data file back & forth (probably source of CPF's explorer alert). I think sometimes the move happens so quick that some of the log files are not getting updated but I'm not 100% sure.

Using a move, what happens in the event you can't do a clean exit because of a crash or unresponsive system? Just trying to think it through makes me wonder if a copy might not be better. Then again, I don't know what you're doing under the covers!

I'll play with it a little more, then try moving it to a different system & let you know what I find out.

False positive

Or whatever they call it when a firewall complains for no real reason. Wink

I doubt that people on limited accounts (with or without UAC) will have an issue as I use standard methods in the launcher that shouldn't be an issue.

If you browse into TaskUnifierPortable\App\AppInfo\TaskUnifierPortable.ini, you'll see how the launcher handles launching and closing TaskUnifier.

The Welcome wizard doesn't show up because TaskUnifier would throw a "Error, settings file not found, will create new one." Or something like that, when I launched TaskUnifier with the launcher. A slight tradeoff, but I think it's worth it.

The log files should be copied fine because the launcher'll wait for TaskUnifier to close, first, (the javaw.exe process) and then move the settings about.

If you can't do a clean exit, (as with most other portable apps here), just relaunch TaskUnifier on the same computer you were on last time. You'll get a message saying something to the extent of "TaskUnfier Portable did not close properly and will clean up. Please restart TaskUnifier Portable manually." This let's the launcher clean any mess that was left behind in the first place.

And thanks for your feedback.

But wait! There's more...

I had already followed that directory path & went on down to \Launcher to find that ini file. I'm no expert but I thought you were moving that 1 directory & 1 file into the App directory tree. What I couldn't tell is what it does on close & if/where it moves them back again (other than going looking to find them). So will it move the data files back during cleanup? That was my concern. It sounds like you're saying it will look for the files in their moved-to location, yes?

I'll keep an eye on the log files to be sure. Sometimes my fingers leave my hands & I'm not entirely sure what they've done!

FYI, TU is at 2.3.1 now, which was an important release because it fixes a freezing bug. Dunno if you want to go ahead & update TUP or leave it the same for testing purposes.

Data folder

The key (the part on the left of the equal sign) is saved with respect to the root of the Data folder, so the launcher copies the data back to Data\TaskUnifierData. If instead it were "aFolder\TaskUnifierData=%PAL:AppDir%\taskunifier\data" the settings would be saved under "Data\aFolder\TaskUnifierData". The same applies to the [FilesMove] part.

And thanks for telling me the 2.3.1 update was out. I just pushed a release for those 50 or so people that cared to download this Wink

So, in the ini,

Does the move key mean that it moves it there & then it reverses the move on close? Trying to learn a little something here!

Download and install problems

I've tried downloading and installing the new version multiple times today from different browsers. When installing it's giving an error:

"Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include incomplete download and damaged media. Contact the installers author to obtain a new copy".

So far, a great task manager

I think it so far is the best of the task managers I've used as far as ease of use goes. It is working just fine.

I did hit one snag though. I had inadvertently kicked off two versions of the app when testing. It overwrote what data I had and lost all the stuff I had put into it. I think limiting the app to only one launch (like Firefox) unless multiple copies can coexist.

Thanks!

I'll continue testing it. I haven't tried the built in syncing mechanism yet (costs money) or the MS Office integrations but everything else seems to be working just fine.

Plug-in free trials

You can try the sync & publishing plug-ins for free. There is just a delay time if you haven't bought a license but they are otherwise full-featured. In fact, you can use them forever without paying if you don't mind the lag. Ben (the author) is such a responsive developer. though, I'd hope you'd pay just to support his work if you continued to use it!

I've been meaning to mention

I've been meaning to mention this for the longest...

When I installed the latest release through "Install a New App" in the platform, it created a TaskUnifier....paf.exe.log file in the same directory where I'd downloaded the paf.exe install file. Was that because it's a dev test or was that accidental?

PAI Version

There was a PA.c Installer version that had logging enabled by default (by accident) back in April. One stable app was released with it and then it was fixed and that app was revisioned. It's likely one or two dev tests were built with it. It can just be ignored.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

New version

Pyro, I just wanted to give you a heads up that TU has a new version out but it's going through some pretty rapid releases right now (3.0.0 beta to 3.1.2 since 09/22). I don't know if you want to be updating that frequently, though!

What do we need to do to get this app moving out of dev test towards general availability? Thanks!

It won't make official just

It won't make official just yet, Java apps are not being accepted for official release. This will change in the future, and then it will be considered along with all the other apps.

One last update?

Hey Pyro, the developer of TaskUnifier has decided to halt development &, as a parting gift, he made the Pro features free. Ben has said that he will still fix major bugs, like no longer syncing, but will not be adding any new features. It's unfortunate because many users have commented that it's the best task manager app they've found.

Is there any chance you'd update this Portable version to his latest? Thanks!
