As this is something I notice within Firefox I'll post this here even though it is also related to Thunderbird. This is an interesting albeit frequent annoyance. TB has no problem launching the FF app from a link within an email message but once FF launches all of my bookmarks are no longer visible. What I do get is the equivalent of another profile where I can bookmark etc. If I launch FF directly this is not a problem only when launching from within TB. Can't speak for other apps as I haven't attempted to test that out. Anyone else seen this?

how did you launch the firefox in this case?
Do you start the firefox or the portable launcher?
Or do you start local firefox?

Just to avoid any confusion or complication I don't have any version of the typical FireFox installed on my local PC. Only using the portable version and synch it with a usb hard drive or flash drive to keep it all up to date and as insurance. Having said that I only launch the portable version directly and not through the portable launcher.
Can you list the exact file path that you are starting in both cases?
So you've set a Firefox Portable install as your default browser?
you have posted You say you do not run Firefox using the portable launcher? That in itself may be the issue try running the launcher and see if the problem persists. The launcher has many features that are needed to keep FF portable including saving bookmarks, moving data, profiles and such. Launchers are an intrinsic part of making a portable app portable, which is why they are there in the first part,\

Don't know about the launcher, but this is [also] what happens when you try to set a Firefox Portable instance as your system's default browser--you get a different profile than the one you use when the portable instance is started normally (a Firefox instead of FirefoxPortable profile I guess you'd say).
portable apps are not meant to be set as default. If you want say FF as default for the system then you should install it to host, If you set a portable program as default, and then usb device is not present then what happens?

if the OP wants Thunderbird [Portable] to use a specific [Firefox Portable] install for links in messages, then there's a different [supported] method for doing that.

Thanks for all the response. If anything I see a lot of passion and that's definitely a good thing. I'm responding to myself because I don't want the thread to become one of those that gets putshed to the right and becomes illegible.
Yes, I'm using the portable version as default. No. I do not use the app launcher and see no reason to. If the application launches directly, whether from c:\portableapps or U:\portableapps, the bookmarks show up correctly. It is only when an HTTP link is clicked from within TB, whether on the stick or local hard drive, that another FF window opens up minus any bookmarks. Except I can bookmark fresh pages on this as though it were another profile even though I've searched and can't find another profile lurking around. I can then close this out, launch directly by either clicking on the FF program itself or its shortcut, and all my saved pages are where they belong. The only other web browsers I have installed on the local machine are Safari and IE9, and those are just in case of emergency. Again, thanks for the attention and I look forward to figuring this out.
Go to about:support and click 'Open Containing Folder' (button next to Profile Directory [at the top]), once for each method of invoking Firefox.
Glenn, I followed your previous link and that was the key to the problem. Seems with my syncing back and forth Thunderbird was confused and by going into the config editor as you suggested and repointing the local and the usb versions to their respective folders everything works correctly again. So what I need to do is leave whatever folder and files I use in syncing that affect this out of the mix and things "should" work. Otherwise it's all good. Thumbs up!
