"Pidgin must close..."

I'm getting the dread MS error, "Pidgin has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" every time I try to open the program. Does anybody else have this problem? Does it have to do with something our IT Police have done to my computer? I'm running version 2.10.2 from my thumb-drive. Thanks in advance.

you could try

re-downloading Pidgin then reinstalling it over the top of your current build, also it is possible without seeing the actual error that the "IT Police" have blocked the ports Pidgin uses? In that case you would need to talk to them, finally not sure if related but there is a new version coming out this week of Pidgin portable which may or may not fix it?

Blocked ports should not

Blocked ports should not impact Pidgin's core though.

True

Which is why I thought of over installing it, my only concern though is the the "IT Police" are involved and all worked well till they stepped in?

"Pidgin must close..."

Hi all;

The error is the same MS error you seen whenever XP doesn't like something and closes your application. (Unfortunately, the only part of the error that will copy is "Pidgin has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.") I'm sure you've seen this 100 times.

I have just learned about Pidgin, so this is a new install. It's not something that was running before and suddenly stopped. I have tried reinstalling and also rebooting the computer. So far, no luck. I don't think IT has done anything to the ports, since my portable Mozilla works just fine. I'd really like to get this working because our IT Police have installed "MS Office Communicator" as our IM system, and it only connects with other employees.

BTW, I also have Yahoo IM installed, which ran just fine until they installed Communicator. Now YIM opens, but searches continually and is never able connect to anything. Don't know if the issues are related.

I don't know much about how computers work. I just run my software and whimper when things don't work. Thanks for the suggestions, and anything else you might think of.

IMHO

It is a UAC issue they have locked down the computer and tightly

Pidgin must close...

That's what I'm afraid of. I think they consider IM programs "entertainment." I'm surprised they let us have Communicator. After all, some of our co-workers are friends too. We might waste a few minutes just chatting. HORRORS!!!!!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the reply.
