filename character bug fixed in vlc-0.8.6-rc1-20061205-0330-win32

Just a heads up that a long-standing bug with UNC filenames has been fixed in official videolan 0.8.6 RC1 nightly build http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/branch-20061205-0330/vlc-0.8.6...

Playing files/playlists with accents/umlauts/japanese characters, etc. in the filename was previously impossible.

This is the forum thread http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=19711

Is there any way that this RC could replace the current VLC portable? Thanks

You can

You can replace the existing VLC in VLC Portable with this if you want. I won't do a new release with 0.8.6 until it's final, though.

Oh OK, I thought you had

Oh OK, I thought you had 'massaged' the exe/dll files to make them better fit the portable environment. I will replace it until the official portable version is released. Thanks.

UPX compressed

They're UPX compressed which cuts VLC's footprint in half and speeds launch time.

Release VLC 0.8.6 media player

2006-12-10

Building on feedback from the 29 million downloads of VLC media player 0.8.5, we bring you version 0.8.6 with many bugfixes, as well as a couple of new features we think you will truly enjoy. Most prominent are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, a Fullscreen controller and Apple Remote support for Mac OS X.
