I'm not sure if you guys can make a Portable AOL, probably version 8.0 or 9.0 if you don't want any goodies included.. just scaled down to good enough to open AOL program to check e-mail and such.

This is not possible because AOL is closed source, copyrighted software which (I would think) is installed at the system level.
use Portable Firefox or Thunderbird to check your AOL mail
AOL is just a fancy internet dialer and the browser is just a skin on Internet Explorer.

You can check your AOL email online at aol.com anyway, so what's the point?
You can check your AOL email and access your AOL stuff through the AOL.com site now. And you can use either Gaim Portable or Miranda Portable to chat with your AIM friends. So, the AOL software is basically useless these days (which, incidentally, is why AOL is phasing it out as they move to an ad-supported business model).

POP Peeper is an excellent freeware program that can check many kinds of email such as pop, hotmail, gmail, yahoo, AOL...and it's portable.
There's no need for a separate app if you use the Webmail extension in TB which checks all of those, integrates with TB, is portable and doesn't require worrying about another app.

If you insist on NOT using the AOL mail web interface then as John said TB is an excellent choice for checking your AOL mail. As well as GMail, Optimum Online, etc. And for IMs you can't beat GAIM
Gmail Fetcher looks like it should work. It's supposed to let you access all your email accounts directly through the Gmail interface. Of course, I was doing this already, by forwarding mail from those other accounts to my Gmail, and Gmail already let you send mail under other addresses. However, it didn't work with AOL before (AOL doesn't let you auto-forward, as far as I can tell), and now it should, since this feature is supposed to work through POP access.

Unfortunately, this service isn't available yet. I read about it on www.Lifehacker.com, but it seems that the service was taken down pretty quickly. The Help section is still up, though, so it should come back eventually.
