This topic is outdated. The current Updater will prompt for username and password when applicable, but I'll keep this here for archival purposes.
There are many different types of ways used to filter internet connections. This method is used at my public library (they don't block PA.c, but require username and password to use the internet, which is not prompted by the updater) and I'm assuming other places do this too. I'm not sure how this will work with other setups, but feel free to try.
***DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK***
- Type in Win+R
- Type regedit in the box that comes up and press enter
- You'll see a tree to the left in the new window. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Then expand "Software" and continue on, until you get "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings.
- Make sure you click on the folder so that it appears highlighted.
- Now scroll down in the main window with all the keys, until you find "Proxy Override" (If it's not there, create it by right clicking anywhere, then clicking New -> String value)
- Now right click and edit the entry. Addresses are separated by semicolons (;) so be sure to add that before applying the following entries
- You'll want to add "portableapps.com." Optionally, you can add "sourceforge.net" or other websites you want to add (be wary of your boss, network administrators, school officials, or people standing behind you).
- Save it, then run the updater.
i did that, but download from sourceforge.net always failed. any hints?
The ways I mentioned only work for the specific setup I had at the library, and there are many other ways to block sites. My school, for example, blocks sourceforge.net as well, and this method doesn't work over there. If you followed these steps exactly, then chances are that your administrators have set up your connection differently.
