Eraser logoEraserDrop Portable 2.1.1 has been released by PortableApps.com. EraserDrop Portable is an easy-to-use secure data removal tool. It is a drop target (a floating icon on your desktop) that you can drop files onto to quickly erase them so they can not be recovered. EraserDrop does away with the standard Eraser Portable interface so you can easily delete files on the go. This release updates the installer and launcher and adds better platform integration. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. And it's open source and completely free.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

ScreenshotEraserDrop's target accepts any combination of files and folders. The target can be moved about the screen by holding the LEFT SHIFT key, LEFT-CLICKING the target, and dragging. The window position is saved, but will be corrected if it goes beyond screen boundaries - ie if you move from a screen with a high resolution to one with a lower resolution.

The image for the drop target can be changed on-the-fly. Simply choose a PNG graphic you like, place it in the Data\images directory, and select the image from the Open File dialog. The window will be sized accordingly. Transparency is supported!

Hide the target by right-clicking and choose 'Hide', or press the hotkey. To bring it back, click the tray icon or use the hotkey (default is unset). The hotkey can be defined from the context menu. See the readme for details.

EraserDrop also includes the ability to wipe the Recycle Bin and wipe drive free space. Right-click and use the 'Tasks' submenu.

Flash Drive Note: Most modern flash drives use wear leveling to spread write operations out over a device. This interferes with EraserDrop's (and other secure deletion utilities) ability to wipe single files. Wiping an entire drive or erasing a file and then wiping free space should still work securely, though it will put additional wear on your drive.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

EraserDrop Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

As this is one of the legacy AutoIT-based apps (before we stopped accepting them), it does have problems with false positives in some antivirus products at the moment. According to VirusTotal, Comodo and ByteHero currently flag EraserDrop.exe as malware. According to Jotti, ArcaVir does, too. I've submitted false-positive reports to them and will update this with any new information.

UPDATE: Comodo and ByteHero fixed their issue as of 5/14/2012. ArcaVir still has the issue.

The version in the app itself remains 2.1.0. The portable package is 2.1.1. No additional features are planned at present until it is rewritten.

The screenshot above is very small so you can't read anything. Is it possible to get a normal sized screenshot for this app so the menu can be legible?

Thanks!

Side note: sadly, it looks like Wraithdu never incorporated my patch back in 2009 to wipe network drives (i.e.: a NAS mapped to a drive letter).

The screenshots were swapped (thumbnail and fullsize). I've fixed em but it'll take a while for it to hit the CDN.

I just did a quick repack of EraserDrop as it was in a very old format. I don't think wraithdu is around anymore. I could look into incorporating your patch if you think folks would find it useful. If we change it, though, we'd likely need a longer pre-release and have to deal with all the false positives before releasing. The only reason the false positives were so low (3) for this release is because I used his unchanged EXE from 2009.

I use this all the time, and have been thinking about re-implementing it using a proper programming language so as to get rid of the false positives. If there's more interest than just me, I'll look into what's needed.

Normally, I'd tell ya I was interested and help you test out your reimplementation, alas, my NAS died so the main reason for me using this type of software is gone. R.I.P. Hammer MyShare NAS!

I'm not sure this is the right place to check for interest as I'm not sure how many users/devs read the app release comments. Maybe check the interest in the normal forum in some way?

JTH: Thanx for the screenie swapout!

If the app is not exited cleanly, then that key will be left behind. If the keys exists before the app runs, it will not be deleted after it closes regardless.
