Windows 7 RC 64 bit

They all load & display correctly in Win 7 RC 64 bit, however:
TCPView - Right-Clicking on an item & "View Process properties" gives error "Unable to query properties for " 3rd party apps return properties, it's just all the system items. Not sure if this is expected behaviour or not.
Process Monitor - on starting it I get a security prompt to allow changes to the computer. This is part of Win 7 UAC, but I thought Portable apps wouldn't be making changes. ???

pmbellisTCPView - Right-Clicking on an item & "View Process properties" gives error "Unable to query properties for "

I can't test on that OS but there's no problem viewing properties here on XP. Perhaps someone with the same system can confirm?

pmbellisbut I thought Portable apps wouldn't be making changes.

At a guess... Process Monitor creates registry keys under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum', from which they inherit 'Read' only permissions, so the launcher changes the Process Monitor permissions to 'Full Control' to allow for an effective backup/restore/cleanup. Process Explorer does this too so, if you see that prompt with Process Monitor, you should see it with Process Explorer as well. If that's what's causing it of course. Do you get the prompt with Process Explorer? If not, I'll need some more info.

I guess these should be marked as Admin only.

Is there any reason these

Is there any reason these couldnt all be placed in 1 launcher rather than having to install 3 (i.e. launcher for all three in one paf package - I believe the PortableApps launcher will detect all 3 in the app directory).

The only downside to this would be if you added more of the sysinternals apps, but once app folders appear in PortableApps platform this would no longer be a problem.

new version?

I'd be happy to see an update to current versions or even the full Sysinternals Suite

This is great, but using

This is great, but using Process Explorer in WIn7, it requests admin privileges on launch. If I use an installed normal version of process explorer I'm not asked for privileges on launch. Is it something you added into the launcher?

PE can't function without

PE can't function without admin privileges. When you installed it, you indicated to the system that it doesn't have to ask anymore for admin rights. It just has from the install. PE on your drive does not.

Can I have a bit more

Can I have a bit more information about this, because I use Process Explorer from my usb stick not program files (which uses admin permissions on everything as you say) the reason I want your version is to transfer settings.

If I remove RunAsAdmin

If I remove RunAsAdmin from the launcher it behaves the same as the standalone version. I'll give you a new one to test in a minute.

Doesn't cleanup on shutdown

Whenever I shutdown/reboot the computer and launch process explorer portable I get:

---------------------------
Process Explorer Portable (PortableApps.com Launcher)
---------------------------
Process Explorer Portable did not close properly last time it was run and will now clean up. Please then start Process Explorer Portable again manually.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

This happens every single time. There's no issue closing the app from the system tray manually and launching, but restarting/shutdown seems to skip the cleanup. I don't have this issue with any other portableapps launcher, and as process explorer is one of the only ones I have on system startup and running 24/7 wherever I am (the system tray icon is invaluable to me) it's quite frustrating as I have to click the ok box and relaunch the app manually every time.

Is there anything that can be done to remedy this? I really love the app and launcher other than this issue.

Close App

Did you close the app before initiating a system shutdown? If not, Windows just crashes it unceremoniously, just as if it were running from an external drive and you yanked it out.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I don't have to manually

I don't have to manually close any other portable apps. Having to remember to manually shutdown this one app before shutdown kind of ruins the simplicity.

Close Your Apps

Windows shutdown is pretty bad about dealing with closing apps. If you have an app like Process Explorer that doesn't respond to a request to shutdown from Windows properly, it's gonna get crashed and your settings will be borked. Even a local install of Firefox will occasionally suffer this fate at the hands of Windows. You could always just use the local version of the app and that way when Windows crashes it it won't lose settings.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I see you

I see you put the new 15.2 into the launcher for 15.13...

I recommend you don't do that :-)

Access Control does work (with 15.13) but something has changed in 15.2. I'll have a look soon enough.

EDIT: I can only reproduce this on first run with 15.2. After manual deletion, the plugin correctly removes the key. Rebooting between tests. Back to watching the football...

thanks for replying

yes i did load the 15.2 because your launcher tries to download the old version and it's not available.

1. you're right.. if i manually delete the key with 'RunAsSystem'.. it does not show up (it does not mean AccessControl is working)

2. if i restart.. and run ProcessExplorerPortable again, the key is added and left behind again.

i've had similar problems with Legacy keys because it's registered to "System".
in my apps., i've had to use PsExec.
But i saw you used AccessControl, and was hoping it worked... but same results.

I also tried in Win7 32-bit, and same results: Legacy key is left behind.
Are you sure AccessControl works for Legacy keys with "System" rights?

Note: i've also tried 'SetACL', and same results.. it's unable to delete Legacy keys. But reading the documentation for SetACL, it says it's designed to delete 'those pesky legacy keys'.? Am i missing something?

My first impression

My first impression that in 15.2 that key wasn't being removed was wrong. I have a local install too & Regshot is marking that key as "added" even if it's already present. After checking the registry & rebooting I'm happy that everything is working here, even 15.2 with the old 15.13 launcher, so I'm going to update it.

._.i've had similar problems with Legacy keys because it's registered to "System"

All the legacy keys here are registered to "Everyone" so perhaps that's where the problem lies. Have you tried the update?

Both Process Explorer and Autoruns?

Is it possible to have icons for both Process Explorer and Autoruns? I looked into the .ini, but it appeared to only switch from one to another.

Color me stupid but how do I

Color me stupid but how do I launch Autoruns, short of going into the App folder itself? I launched Dependency Walker from within Process Explorer but I don't see an option to do that with Autoruns.

The idea was

The idea was to handle the integration of these apps in one launcher.

Without the INI you can use: Process Explorer -> Dependency Walker

With the INI: Autoruns -> Process Explorer -> Dependency Walker

In that order. So that's a "no" I'm afraid :-)

TCPView Installer error

I consistently get an error in the installer for TCPView when it attempts the download. "...Installer...unable to download TCPView....incomplete without it...try...again. (ERROR: Request Error (400))" After clicking OK, some more stuff happens & I eventually get to a completion screen that says TCPView Portable has been installed. Of course, it really hasn't been but the folder structure got created, except TCPView itself.

Please fix it. Thanks!

Autoruns?

Autoruns doesn't seem to be working... it doesn't appear anywhere. Besides, why would it be a PE plugin? afaik, Autoruns is a separate application.

Process Explorer 15.23 Install failure

I consistently get an installer error: "downloaded copy of Process Explorer 15.23 is not valid & can be installed." What do I need to do to get it working?

Also, how do I launch Autoruns using this? I'm actually more interested in that than PE since I found out about Process Hacker!

There was a silent update

There was a silent update of the package (procexp.chm) so the MD5 had changed.

For Autoruns you asked the same question here so it's the same answer. If it's still unclear see ProcessExplorerPortable\help.html.

But your answer was, & still

But your answer was, & still is, lacking! I asked how to launch it without having to go into the App folder, which you didn't address & doesn't appear possible since you at least have to go there to edit the ini. Neither Process Explorer Help nor ProcessExplorerPortable Help give you any information on it either. For that matter, you can't even get to the latter without going into the folder!

Trying to cram unrelated things into a single launcher with absolutely zero documentation on how to get them to work is not user-friendly nor conducive to building a rep for ease of use. Calling it a plugin was also misleading because it doesn't actually plugin into Process Explorer (Depends can at least be launched from within PE) - it just happened to share a launcher because you stuffed it in there.

I'm just glad that John or someone saw fit to publish Autoruns Portable as its own app. That made me & probably some others here happy that we don't have to mess with PEPortable any more.
