Not much

Even a realtime scanner would be starting up on an infected computer, where the virus already has a pretty good hold. You could use ClamWin to scan the Windows/system32 directory on the local PC. That will detect most viruses off the bat without taking the time to scan the whole PC.

It would be good if we could

It would be good if we could set the drives to be read only - some of my drives have a switch on them for this, but not my primary one.

Shame most manufacturers don't include one... Even floppies have them!

Build your own

The write protect switches have disappeared from most of the newer drives. I created my own flash drive using a portable USB card reader that holds an SD card. Its similar in size to most flash drives, but SD cards all come with a write protect switch. Some of these USB -> SD card readers will break easily, so shop around as some are built better than others.

How about

if you (we) buy a business-card size CD, burn the LiveCD version of Clamwin, and carry it in our wallets. That way, we always scan every computer before we insert our flash/hard drive.

That's a good idea - anyone

That's a good idea - anyone know where we can buy just a couple of cds like that? All I can find are companies selling huge packs of them...

2 ideas

1. you could pack ClamwinPortable on a multisession cd and run it from there (It doesnt have to be a bootable cd, does it?)
or
2. you could use a small (128mb) usb drive with only PAM and ClamwinPortable on it.
If you dont store any personal files on it you can just reinstall everything...

25+

The smallest number I could find was a 25 pack. They're a bit of a specialized thing and people normally burn a bunch of em... unlike normal CDRs where you can buy just a few of em.
