GIMP Portable not opening PDF files

I have been using GIMP portable for years. I am now using the latest version - 2.8 rev 4.
In the previous several versions, I have been able to open PDF files in GIMP. However in this version, when I try to open a PDF file I get an "unknown file type error"
Specific symptoms:
In the Portable GIMP, File>Open...
- If I select the file type filter to All Images, PDF files do not appear.
- If I search through the file type filters for Portable Document format, it does not exist.
- If I select the file type filter to All Files, PDF files appear, but when I try to open any of them, I get the error message "Opening x:\yadayada.pdf failed: Unknown file type".

For comparison, I have a standard GIMP 2.8 installed. In the standard "out-of-box" (no additional plugins) version I have no problems. Specifically:
In Installed GIMP, File>Open...
- Select the file type filter to All Images, all PDF files appear.
- There is a built-in file type filters for Portable Document format.
- PDF files open, with the normal dialog to select pages, etc.

Thanks.

Works fine here

It works as expected here.

Two things to check:

1. Do you have Ghostscript Portable installed? If not, either install it, or direct GIMP Portable to you local installation of Ghostsvript, your choice.

2. If that doesn't fix it (though I suspect that's the issue), try renaming your Data directory, and see if this still occurs with the DefaultData.

You shouldn't need Ghostscript to open PDF

GIMP has used internal libraries for a while now to open PDF (I believe is is libpoppler). I do have GS (64 bit) installed, but do not know how to direct GIMP to it, since I never had to do that before - and it's not listed in the preferences.

Just a guess

That was just a guess, anyway. Did you try with fresh a fresh Data folder?

Fresh Data folder did not work.

I'm gonna try to do a full clean re-install of the Portable version. I guess. Just too tired to try to mess with it and the various plugins I have. Until then I'll just use the installed version.

32-bit

Side note: GIMP Portable is 32-bit so can only use 32-bit Ghostscript.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Works for me

I don't have GS Portable or a local install of GS.
I can see PDF files with File->Open, can import them successfully, and have the PDF file type filter in the list.

Maybe try a reinstall, or copy the associated library from the local install to the portable one?

I use a lot of plugins

I use the FX-Foundry collection, PSPI with the XImagic PSP plugins, Liquid Rescale, G'MIC, and more, I'm in the process of rebuilding my configuration, starting with a clean install of GIMP Portable.
SO far, with FX-Foundry, PSPI and the XImagic stuff, it seems to be working normally. If I encounter a plugin that breaks the PDF import, I'll post it.
