I have exactly the same issue after update from Firefox 12 Portable to Firefox 13 Portable, so I made a bat file on desktop to remove "parent.lock" before starting Firefox Portable.
Anyone with the same problem?
I almost always close Firefox with tabs open to continue reading next day. Is there any solution for this problem?
I almost never had that problem in ages. Neither on XP, nor on 7.
One question on my mind: do you close Firefox Portable first or do you shut down the computer at once? If you do the latter, I think that Windows doesn't always close applications in the right order (ex.: closing Firefox Portable and other portable applications before closing the PortableApps platform itself). Besides, one quite often sees that "one or more applications are preventing shutdown"... and then they fore-quit after so many seconds. The last two situations are typical cases where the "parent.lock" file is not deleted.

I close it first, mgagnonlv. I know that when I shut down the PC it usually doesn't close properly. I think it was problem with update from v12 to v13 from Firefox v12. I said was because I just installed new FirefoxPortable_13.0_English.paf.exe over this probably improperly updated version, and now it works as it should. Now I can remove my bat file :).
Thanks for your quick response mgagnonlv
@cadcapricorn,
here is my .bat file. I launch it before I rar my portable firefox. so, my archived firefox is only 19 mb.
cd profile

I've just downloaded FirefoxPortable_13.0_English.paf.exe. I set it up and run it. With do nothing, close it properly (in a normal way, with the red cross button). and result, parent.lock file is still there. here is screenshot as well.

Are you closing Firefox before deleting parent.lock? As the name suggests Firefox locks to the file for usage. Reboot and you should be able to remove it.
Why don't you understand me. I closed firefox of course. after closing firefox, i take a screenshot above. please take a look at it.
Is firefox.exe still present in Task Manager? It can take a full minute or more to close on slower flash drives.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm sorry, I assumed firefox.exe left running was the issue, as that's fairly common for some slow USB drives.
Firefox 13 seems to keeps its parent.lock file in its profile folder after shutdown. This change was intentional and made as a part of bug 294260. I can see why this was done, as a parent.lock file left in the profile folder doesn't necessarily mean its in use. Checking whether or not a firefox.exe process is hooking it is much better.
So, this is not portable app error. This is a known issue for non-portable firefox. Everybody lives this problem? Have I understood true? Sorry my english isn't enough enough.
The parent.lock file is entirely Firefox's responsibility. We don't create it. We don't delete it.

It lefts a empty folder here.
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
and also here.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\mozilla.org\Mozilla]
"CurrentVersion"="13.0"
Both of those are removed on exit automatically by the launcher (unless you use the advanced options in the FirefoxPortable.ini of course). If that is not the case, please create a new topic and detail exactly what happened including OS, install location, etc.

No, and it's not an error by Mozilla either. Not deleting the file on exit is intentional for the reasons I have mentioned. You may find more information in the bug reports I linked to if you wish to look a them.
I did follow some of the info posted here and I still get the same error.
I'd like to know why I don't get the error with version 12.0 what's the difference between this and the others 13.0 and up ? (last one I tried is 14.0.1)
If anyone knows the answer please share it with us.
TIA

Can you confirm that firefox.exe is not still in the task manager when you get that message?
Often times, leaky add-ons or plugins can cause Firefox to stay open longer than it should after all its windows are closed.
