Legacy Suite

I would like a Legacy Suite compiled not because of Win98 but because of the old Flash Drives I have. They won't run on my Win7-64bit computer.

So far The Legacy Suite consists of:

Portable Apps: 1.6.1
Firefox Portable Legacy 36_3.6.28
Thunderbird Portable Legacy 31_3.1.19

Anything else I would have to test on the drive and a Win98 computer. If they work on Win98 then I'd test on WinXP.

Has anyone else complied such a list and tested them ?

No Further Plans

It's been quite some time since we dropped Windows 9x. We have no plans to compile a legacy suite at this time. Any apps of any use are now very insecure (browsers, email, office stuff, etc) if you go back to the Windows 9x compatible versions.

Your flash drove not working on Windows 7 could be another issue. Your Windows 7 machine could have faulty USB ports. Or your drives could be getting old and flaky. Or they may just need to be reformatted as FAT32. If the drives are dying, it's easier to just replace them as a basic drive better than your older ones would likely be $10 or less.

Just checking if someone else

Just checking if someone else has already complied this list.
I know it's not going to be developed or supported officially.

As for the drive, it has built in security software that is not compatible with Win7. (Nothing wrong with the computer!)
When this drive was first sold it was priced at $500 seriously! I bought several (NEW) for $5
I'm not giving them up without a fight.

I am storing personal information on them and trying to get a suite built in to access all of the files.

Thanks for the reply, David

Different Tactic

Using a legacy suite just to keep them on these outdated/unsupported drives would be a bad call. You'd be putting your computer's security at risk (using insecure software) so you could secure other things (using these drives). You'd be better off removing the software and using them as standard drives and then using something like TrueCrypt to secure them. Then you can use them on all your PCs. It's probably not worth risking your security for a dead product just because you spent a lot on it previously.

You bought them for $5

When it comes to older technology, the original price is pretty meaningless - at one time 1 gig drives were over $100 each, now an equivalent drive could cost as low as $5. Those older drives weren't any better, they were priced higher - new tech always has astronomical prices.
As of today, those drives are worth what you paid for them - $5 - which for most people, would be what you'd spend on "burner" drives.

You can always assemble your own collection of outdated portableapps.
Go here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/
and browse through the folders, you can find legacy versions of almost everything.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Thank you for the reply. I

Thank you for the reply.
I have checked that list. I was hoping someone would post to say that they had done this already. Sill no help yet.

The Drives I have were valuable because of the BUILT IN security Hardware and Software. They function beautifully but only on windows XP. They will function as storage. Add the documents then put them away.

I have a dozen other flash drives including the USB 3.0 Portable apps 32GB custom drive. I don't need more drives.
I just want them functioning independently.

Legacy?

If they work on Windows XP, just use them on an XP machine. No need for a custom suite as our platform and ALL of our apps work just fine on XP. Using Windows 98 isn't even necessary. And, as mentioned, it would be a huge security risk to use those old apps anyway, completely negating the purpose of having a nice secure drive.

I still use such

I still have in use the plat form 1.6 and for occasions when I use W98 I have older firefox, 2.x and Thunderbird 2.x on it.
I think all should be available from the archive here still.

Problem with w98 is, you have to either use usb sticks with max 512mb or install alternative driver for larger stick. The alternative driver (I would have to search for the link now) is simply a replacement for the build in usbdrv.sys and works then similar as on XP etc.

her you will find the driver for w98 and w98se

download link

here is the link for 1.6.1 platform

http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/PortableApps.com%20Pl...

here for the firefox 3628
http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%...

and herefor the TB 3119
http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Thunderbird...

this should enable you to set all up in your special usb sticks. I am not 100% sure if firefox and thunderbird versions 3.x work on w98 however. I am having versions 2.x for that reason, I think the 3.x did not work properly, so kept rather the 2.x for that special purpose.
