I just installed the portable apps menu. When I click on documents/music/etc icon nothing comes up. I am not sure how to save documents to these folders so I can access them on the go later. Additionally, when I click the backup folder nothing happens. Any help for a newbie would be great. Thanks

How did you install the menu?
The best thing to do is download the Base Suite
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/PortableApps_Suite_Base_...
and uncompress that to the root of your drive. That will make the necessary folders and install the menu and the backup software, but nothing else.
If you want to install software from here (or anywhere) if you put it into the PortableApps folder that the install will create, then it will appear on the menu.
I downloaded the base and clicked install. I directed it to my thumb drive and it created a folder called PortableApps. I have no problem clicking on the Options>install app. I'll wipe the thumb drive and see if that works. Thanks

don't create a folder call Portable Apps first, just extract it to the root of your drive and it will set it all up for you.

Yes once I clicked on the .exe for the base program the base application asked me where I wanted to install. I directed it to the thumb drive and after the install I end up with a folder called PortableApps with the .exe to launch the menu program. Can I wiped the thumb drive and tried it again and received the same results. Any more suggestions?

What else does it make on your drive? On mine it creates a documents folder, with pictures, music, video inside, and a portableapps folder with portableappsmenu and a backup thing in.
It creates is a folder called PortableApps. Within that folder is another folder called PortableAppsMenu. Within this folder is License.txt and PortableAppsMenu.exe. That is all.
I can then install items like portable firefox etc using the options, install and then going to the location of the item I downloaded. Once it gets done installing I then have another folder under the PortableApps folder for whatever program I just installed.
All programs run properly, but when I click on documents, music, photo's, etc nothing happens. When I click on backup it brings up the next menu and there are two options backup and restore. I click on backup and nothing happens as well.

In the root-directory of your drive (thats the folder you see when you click on the symbol of your drive), you should have 2 directories. One called PortableApps and one called Documents. Inside the Documents folder, there are 3 directories: Video, Music, and Pictures.
If tey arent there after you installed it, they should certainly be there after you run it for the first time.

After install and running it for the first time the second folder is still not there. I created a folder called documents and put within it Video, Music and Pictures but the icon on the menu still doesn't work. The backup option is still not working as well. _____________________________________________

Did you redownload the installer?
Or tried another one?
Because the only thing I can think of right now is a corrupted installer...

It's weird because this normally just works.
What version of Windows etc are you on?

is a patch to the newest build of the menu, just download it on top of your old PortableAppsMenu.exe in /PortableApps/PortableAppsMenu
and then you have the newest version - that might help...
Really not sure what the problem was but I downloaded another copy of the base application and installed it on another drive and it is working correctly now. Thanks for everyones support and assistance. _____________________________________________

It sounds like everything is working properly with the possible exception of when you click on the data folders. What happens for me is when I click on documents, music, or photos; Windows Explorer opens showing what files are in those folders. There should be nothing in those folders until you create data and put it there. Does Windows Explorer open when you click on a data folder or does "nothing happen"?

OOPs: I didn't notice the problem had been resolved - sorry
I think the installer was corrupt. I downloaded another copy and everything is working properly now. But to answer your question Clair, when I would click on the icon's in the menu, nothing would happen. I would not get a windows explorer, I would not get an error message or anything. At anyrate it is working now and thanks again for everyone's help on this.

In case no one else picked it up.
My first thought when I read this was that you got the installer for the patch the first time around, I've since tried it, and confirmed my theory.
The patch is meant to be installed over an existing Portable Apps Menu installation, it doesn't create the other folders (Documents, Videos, Music, and Pictures), only the files that needed updating (PortableAppsMenu.exe and License.txt), which have their default sub-folders set.
Hope this helps clear things up for everyone.
