10 min to start libre office

Hi,

Libre Office is installed on a 16 Go USB key (fat 32). The problem is that libre office (writer or an other program) needs 10 minutes to start.

What is the solution to start more quickly ?

Thanks for your answers.

PS
The computer (Win XP) is a Nec Celeron D (1,60GHz) with 2 Go RAM

Try Locally

Try copying LibreOffice Portable to the local hard drive (C:\LibreOfficePortable) temporarily and starting it. If it starts normally, it means that your flash drive is just incredibly slow. 16GB and 32GB flash drives are much slower than 4GB ones. And cheap 16/32GB flash drives can be incredible slow.

It doesn't matter whether you

It doesn't matter whether you put it on the computer itself. It stil takes ages to start up. In my case (LibreOffice 3.3.2; 2,4 Ghz processor; 3,42 Gb RAM) it took about five whole minutes for LibreOffice to show. After LibreOffice shows, it does not responding for a couple of minutes. So, it is not due to your USB stick, it's due to LibreOffice itself. Hopefully this gets resolved, since LibreOffice claiming that they're better than OpenOffice does not start with this kind of issues, in my opinion.

Actually, it does matter.

Actually, it does matter. While LibreOffice is still quite slow, it is much faster to read\write direct from the hard drive than from the flash drive. Some flash drives have terrible read\write speeds.

Perhaps, but for LibreOffice

Perhaps, but for LibreOffice it still doesn't matter. I installed LibreOffice on a desktop. Version 3.3.2 needs about 10 minutes to get up and running. Version 3.4.2 doesn't always start up at all, at first. But when it does, it still needs about 7-10 minutes to start up. In my opinion, one should better stick with OpenOffice Portable.

Antivirus?

As I can't recreate your situation on ANY test setup, can I inquire what antivirus you're using? I'd be willing to guess AVG. Try scanning the whole app first. Then disable your antivirus and run the app directly while antivirus is disabled and see how long it takes to start up.

Thats just it

Unlike Microsoft Office where each app is a seperate one that can start nearly immediately, LibreOffice and OpenOffice are both one GIANT app (and therefore, ALL variables have to be initialized before launch. Blame the StarOffice creators and Oracle and the Doc Foundation for not fixing it.

10 minutes is extremely and unusually long

I've got LibreOffice Portable 3.3.3 installed on my hard drive, and I just launched it: 16 seconds to open Writer.
In my experience with OpenOffice and LibreOffice, they have generally been fairly responsive. OOo 1.0 was quite slow to open, but that was years ago; now, I find Microsoft Office starts slower than LibreOffice.

I think this problem is unusual, and does not reflect the experience of the majority of users.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Libre Offce slow to get going.

Hi all,

Yes I can agree 100% with this problem - I've had the exact same problem myself.

However, simply copying the relevant files to your local hard drive is defeating the object of the Portable Apps concept: The whole point is that you carry them around with you on a USB drive and they can be run directly from this without any installation, and useful for those of us that have to use computers that we do not have administrator rigths for.

I agree that the advice given may be of use to get the appliction to start without the long delay, but it is some what missing the point..

Better Drive

The simple (and really only answer) is to buy a better drive.

must be slow usb drives

Tried timing it myself ... vn 3.4.3 .. each from a click on PA menu

8gb usb drive
lo 18secs
writer 30secs

hd partition
lo 12 secs
writer 7 secs

starting libreoffice first before writer, calc etc seems to speed things up

My Own Experiences

First installation:

1. Initial start up took 'many' minutes.
2. Subsequent start up's - about 50 seconds

Second installation (opting for removal of different languages):

1. Initial start up took about two minutes.
2. Subsequent start up's - 19 seconds.

This package took a little more than an hour to install (wow!). Now, with 19 seconds start up, it's still slow when compared to "normal" apps -- but tolerable for anticipated occasional use while traveling.

19?

My local install on a 7200RPM drive with a big cache takes 10 seconds. So I'd call 19 seconds for the portable one from a flash drive pretty darn good.

Hopefully...

Users will note that they can chop off significant start-up time by installing (or re-installing) LibreOffice -- making sure to check the option to REMOVE different languages. Good at least for English language users (which I presume are the majority)...

All Languages

That options removes additional languages (and results in improved performance) for all supported languages, not just English.

Lighter and Quicker

For those whose spreadsheet needs are relatively straightforward, I highly recommend giving Gnumeric a whirl. Installed, it's a fraction of the size of LibreOffice, and it opens up in 5 seconds!

As for word processing, most all public computers nowadays have some kind of word processor. Heck, the ubiquitous MS Write is reasonably capable in a pinch! But if you want a word processor on your flash drive, there's AbiWriter too.

Using at work, no USB access

I found out that using LibreOffice on the harddisk at work took ages to load. Loading LibreOffice at home on a USB stick takes only seconds. So in some way something at work is responsible for the delay. Perhaps the virusscanner, which is McAfee DLP, which s*cks in my opinion. Of course I can't uninstall the virusscanner at work and try loading LibreOffice without it.

not the USB

I have an 8GB Corsair high speed drive. it takes 3-6 hours to even install the app. Previously, with an older platform on the same drive, portable apps all loaded quickly including open office and libre office.
I am seeing all apps installing slow and running slow on a win xp system with plenty of hardware to handle it. There may be a bigger issue here for the platform as well. Also, its a good point about security software, it could also be a factor. Have to test that locally and see what I get. as of now the libre office update has been installing since 10 AM EST and is only half way done as of 14:00 EST.

There must be something wrong

There must be something wrong with your setup. The installation does take some time, but even on a slow computer and with a fairly slow 32GB drive I find it doesn't take more than half an hour or so. That's on XP as well as Windows 7. 3-6 hours is far too much. Startup time is a few minutes. Not exactly fast, but not *that* slow either.

I'd have a close look at my setup and switch off any anti virus programmes and the like. I'd also check the drive using one of the many programmes that can do that.

Like Hans said, there must be

Like Hans said, there must be something interfering on your setup. On my slower drives, installation can sometimes take up to an hour, especially if I select to remove unwanted languages (these get installed at first an deleted afterwards). But that's my worst case scenario. On my USB 3 drive it just takes about 15 minutes, but I use a blazing fast lexar jumpdrive triton (its write speed for small 4k files is ten times faster than my old fast USB 2 drive and still 3 times faster than the pa.c companion).

Start up time with my USB 2 drive were about 1-2 minutes and is 40 sec. max on my jumpdrive.

I use many different computers at school and it never takes more than an hour to install even on these outdated machines.

Maybe your antivirus is interfering or your drive is damaged. Did you try it on your local hdd?

I suspect a firewall could be to blame

Firewall not allowing the unknown new version 'in' ... not quickly anyway
