ran a virus scan

it takes about 5 seconds per file on her computer. I stopped after half an hour.

I suggested she buy a new one but she is in a major money crisis.

recover slow laptop

Hi Pyromaniac,

Not sure how much you're capable of but probably more than me Wink

I tried fixing a friends PC but the recovery partition was corrupt, to top it off I only found after I got to the point of no return!

Anyway, my point, the machine had XP home on it, and according to a technical support site (my post http://forum.technical-assistance.co.uk/restore-pc-gone-wrong-vt1009.html ) you can download and install another copy of XP home perfectly legally AS LONG AS YOU USE YOUR ORIGINAL LICENSE KEY THAT CAME WITH THE MACHINE. It's actually the license you pay for not the software!

I did verify this but I can't remember how. I think it was actually on MS site or Wikipeadia.

If you do this, it is advisable to backup the drivers or download them from the manufacturers website, also if for example you have XP home then you should reinstall this version onto the machine. If you don't there is a possibility of problems occurring. If XP pro then reinstall XP pro, etc.

Hope this helps.

I read your post (that you linked to)

and then I saw how long everyone's was and I stopped.

I probably am going to try everything else first and only do that as a last resort, because I know its going to take a long time (hours) to install XP and all the drivers.

And note to everyone: no more comments on my issues... I appreciate your help, but I'm not sure its very prapper likes it too much (although it does give him publicity).

Reboot

PyromaniacI thought... what's the worse thing that could happen? And I waited for it to shut down, took it out, and then it turned on again.

Probably not related to your problem but just to point out that the launcher is designed to let the computer reboot (with your drive in) and then clean up when Windows loads again.

In fact, thinking about it now, even switching off and restarting would be ok as long as your drive is still there and on the same drive letter. If not, Windows will be looking for it on every load and Glary Utilites registry entries won't have been cleaned.

Minor Issue

This app is still working like a charm and I'm still loving it.

There is one small issue I've noticed, and this is probably an issue with the app itself but I thought I'd raise it here first:

If the current user's desktop folder ("C:\Documents and Settings\current_user\desktop") is empty, i.e. you have no user specific icons on your desktop the Glary shortcuts fixer wants to try to delete. Probably nothing bad will happen but I doubt you'd want to delete that folder ever.

I assume that if the "all users" desktop folder is empty then the fixer will try to delete that as well, but I haven't tried that.

Like I said, this is probably a base-app specific issue rather than a portable apps version issue, but I thought I'd raise it here first.

Update:First off, I should have said that I noticed this under the shortcuts fixer as part of the "1 click maintenance" section. I'm assuming that this is equivalent to using the specific shortcuts fixer module with the current user desktop and start menu settings. If you choose to scan a drive then the problem does not manifest itself. In addition, the all users folder is unaffected in both cases, even if you remove every single shortcut from your desktop including the recycle bin.

Online Installers

I feel a bit stupid. I couldn't work out how when I downloaded the last update from here how I ended up with version 2.22.896 instead of 2.21.0.863. Then it occurred to me that since this is an online installer, every time I run the installer, regardless of whether it's new or not, it will always go out to the application website and download the latest and greatest.

Is this a problem? I'd imagine not for the most part, but if there were fundamental changes to the core application then online installers could break. In this case, even though you say you're offering version 2.21, you're really not. These issues would apply to not just Glary but potentially any online installer.

Don't

Most of online installers *will* check the MD5 and fail if the file has changed, which they should.

Although I noted that it didn't check the MD5 in the release notes, I can't remember the exact reason why, to be honest. Maybe to avoid some work, but that doesn't sound like me...

Consider it fixed in the next one. I checked the app btw, no changes Smile

Ok, at least I know I'm not going insane. Wink

The MD5 thing makes sense. Is the reason you didn't include it because there's some kind of definitions file that changes in the installer (maybe like an updated file of registry locations to check for cleaning). So the definitions might change even though the base app hasn't, thus the installer MD5 breaks? Just a guess. I can't imagine it's an oversight on your part, you're not exactly a portableapps noob. Wink

Either way, you're forgiven! hehe. No big deal, everything seems to be running fine.

Launcher Version Info?

This really applies to ALL apps not just GUP. I have often updated a PAP app from the beta testing section of the site and wondered if the version I had was up to date or not. I'm specifically talking about the launcher itself not the app. Is there some way of finding out the version of the launcher being used for a specific app rather than downloading and reinstalling when unsure? As sometimes Launchers are updated but not the app.

File Properties

Are you talking about launchers or installers? The version number associated with the launcher is the version of the PortableApps platform being used. (check version tab under file properties in Windows Explorer). This is currently 1.6 something for most apps.

Installers don't really have their own distinct version number as such (that I know of) they simply reflect the version number of the application they are installing (or think they are installing in the case of Glary as above). So the only real way to know if you're using the most recent is to compare the portable application version number with its original source counterpart.

This method should become more reliable once PortableApps.com has released version 2 of the platform. (then many apps will be updated to their most recent version and hopefully many beta apps will make it to full release).

Well I suppose Installers.

Well I suppose Installers. Look at the download number for this app for example, it is currently at version 2.23.0.923 Dev Test 1. Now lets suppose I download this version today and next week can't remember if I actually downloaded it and updated the app. Well how can I check that without going through the entire d/l + install procedure unnecessarily?

This may seem trivial if taken as only applying to this one particular app, but I have around 25-30 apps from the beta testing section of this site. It then becomes a pain when trying to update certain apps when unsure which version you have. When the version number matches fine but when it relies on dev test numbers it's a bit messy! Just trying to save a bit of time and hassle Wink

Hover your mouse cursor over the app in the PA menu It should tell you the version you have installed.

That's easy enough!! At least

That's easy enough!! At least it would be if I used the PA Platform. Which I no longer do. Personally, after a 18 months of using PAM MOD R34, I wanted something easier to use when looking for an app. The MOD had categories but you had to scroll and open menus. Still a bit clumsy in my opinion, sorry no offence meant. So I tried several other menus and found that AStart suits me best. Not only can you add apps but folders as well. And you can autostart folders or even a txt file if you wish as well as apps.

So now I use AStart to contain all my apps and autostart win explorer folder containing my PortableApps, Rocket Dock - which is used for my everyday apps, and viglance win7 taskbar emulator. If Rocket Dock could autostart apps and open win explorer folders then that would be my sole Portable Apps Platform. To be honest, and fair to those that work hard on PAP, it's a great Menu, but in my opinion no match for the simplicity and ease of use of AStart and RocketDock.

So for people in my position (am I alone?) how do I check the version I have is up to date?

Store it with my menu program

I have a similar issue but in my case the problem is even worse because I maintain portable apps folders for all my family members. What I've taken to doing is to store the version number of the app in my menu program (ASuite in my case), and I update that each time I update the app. I also make sure that if I update an app, that I update everybody's, so I know we're all using the same version.

It's not a very glamorous system but I really can't think of anything better.

Me too

that is - maintain portable apps folders for family members and use ASuite.

I've been waiting patiently for months for PAP 2.0 Beta 5 hoping that it will have enough of the features of ASuite so I can switch so that I don't spend so much time doing maintenance.

I've been trying to install Glary Utilities on my drive, but when I run the installer, it tells me that the downloaded copy of Glary Utilities is not valid. If I try opening it afterwards, I get a pop-up box telling me that GlaryUtilities.exe can't be found.

I'm fairly positive that this is due to Glary Utilities having updated and the launcher needing to be updated to match the new version number. As Glary so often updaes this can happen. Be patient and Prapper will provide Wink

the launcher includes the MD5 checksum of the download, so that it can check for partial or corrupted downloads of the main installer.

When the upstream app goes to a new version, the checksum no longer matches.

Prapper, is this perhaps why you disabled the MD5 check? Because essentially, users can't install Glary Portable if they update but the launcher isn't?

Installation error, possibly

Installation error, possibly due to new version (2.27.0.982).

I there a possibility to check that before the update as it always leaves the old installation destroyed if I don't make a backup before (as I this time forgot - again...)? As it is an online installer I find no way to reverse that.

Really great! Is that a new feature of PA.c Installer or did you add custom code? I lost track of PA.c development for a while. I never mentioned that issue even though it should obviously be applicable to other online installers, too (Should I? And if, where?).

MD5 check prevents installation from the development test 1 launcher (for version 2.28) since there's a new base app version. Basically, I can't use this PAF launcher. Sad My only solution is to copy from an existing installation.

Wasn't there talk about being able to specify the location of the files for online installers? That might get around the problem.

Update (almost) Successful

Just updated to 2.30.0.1066 on Windows 7 with admin rights. Everything seems to be okay.

UPDATE: I might have spoken too soon. I don't know if this is a problem with the base app, or whether a file was somehow missed with the portable version, OR whether it's simply my problem but when I attempted to open

Modules -> System Tools -> System Information

I get an error saying that xmlrtl70.bpl is missing. I searched online and found that this is a Borland XML parsing library (or something like that), and was able to download it. Upon placing that file in \App\Glary Utilities\App\ directory, functionality was restored.

This raises another minor question why there are two App directories, is that truly the structure, or does it possibly hint that I've screwed up my instance somehow?

Anyway, everything seems to be working for now.

Yes, GUP runs fine and I think I tested ALL the modules. The only one that doesn't run is the System Information module. So maybe a base app problem? I'm kinda half curious to download it and test.

Base App Has xmlrtl70.bpl

Well I just downloaded gusetup.exe from glarysoft.com, and installed it and the file was present (and consequently system information ran fine).

Maybe there's a problem extracting that file? Is there any way you can see what the online installer is doing? (I've never paid attention to see if there is some "verbose" mode or something)

portable version

GUP downloads the portable version not the regular setup.exe so maybe that's the difference. The installer just extracts everything so there's nothing to check. If I look through the zip for 2.28.0.1011 the file isn't there either.

I still think it's a problem with the base app.

Out of curiosity, do you get a "Percent error:0.00" when you look at the memory category of the System Information? The information and pie chart appears to be broken at the bottom of the screen too, for the memory category.

It's looking like that particular module has some base app issues.

As far as GUP goes though... looking good!

Next!

I'll test it on XP when I get home, perhaps that's a Win7/64Bit issue.

It pops up with a message box that says "Percent error:0.00" and that's it, nothing else. Then it displays all the processes fine with their memory usage, but at the bottom it says my entire RAM is unused, and the pie chart is completely green... errr.. I think not! Pardon

But as stated, I don't think this is a portable issue so we can move on.

Thanks for your work on GUP.

Doesn't update to latest

Hi, been running this since 2.x.x.x dev test 1 release, and it works great.

However, since I updated last time - to version 2.30.0.1066, which it updated itself to flawlessly - I've begun getting notifications on each start about a new version, and going to Status page and hitting the 'Check for Updates' button, then tells me it'll open a new browser window to download latest version. And it does open the download page. However, looking under the 'Builds' section on the page (where the portable version is located), it seems that latest build haven't been updated in there - it's still the 2.30.0.1066 build in this section, whereas the latest version is 2.31.0.1098.

So I'm guessing the problem rests with the author not having made latest version available in PA-format yet.

Apart from this, the app seems to be running pretty perfectly, so I'd call it release ready once the app author decides to get his builds updated. Nice work, keep it up. Wonderful utility pack.

You can add Win7 x64 ultimate (admin) to the list of tested platforms, btw. Smile

New portable

A new portable version has been made available on the Glarysoft website, 2.32.0.1126.

I've picked up the self-extracting version but am unsure what to do; even thou it appears to be in the same format, the files are in different places. It can be found here.

I'd rather not simply wipe my current installation in favor of the new official build, as I've made a very long list of exceptions to the registry cleaner tool/part which fixes the problems the registry cleaning can cause in relation to Broadcom's BT-drivers (clearly a Broadcom-based software error, but knowing that won't fix anything...).

¿ *.paf.exe again ?

I don't know for sure (haven't used Glary Utilities myself) but looking at the description above I'd think you can just run the "GlaryUtilitiesPortable_2.x.x.x_Development_Test_1_online.paf.exe" again, and I think it will download the latest 2.x.x.x release from the site, and you just need to make sure it's installing over your current installation (though I'd make a backup copy first just in case I misunderstood something, and it doesn't work right)
Let us know if that works for you.

After some consideration (and yes, doing a backup of my current Glary Util) I simply wiped out the old Glary folder on the drive, then transfered the new portable version from Glary to the drive. I haven't tested with RegShot, but otherwise it seems to integrate just fine, and I simply re-did all the registry exceptions for my BT dongle.

Your solution sounds feasible, but I do find it a little strange that the built-in updater in Glary worked once and then not again. I suppose this is related to their website. When I find time, I'll do your recommended test on my second PA-drive and report back.

while installing,

while installing, GlaryUtilitiesPortable.exe tries to change this registry key:
HKUS\S-1-5-21-692866613-4136926599-3229785667-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You mean while running

You mean while running. Yes, it's supposed to. This is in case you reboot the system as part of the cleaning process, the app will launch on restart & finish what it started. See the notes in the original post. The key is removed when you exit, as normal.

Was not sure if the program

Was not sure if the program was starting or still installing when Comodo message popped up. Thanks for the clarification.

Thought so...

I had wondered what that was. I use an app called StartupMonitor and every time I start GUP, SM asks my permission to allow a GUP app/process at WinStartup. I assume it's this reg key?

My main reason for posting is actually to ask about the new version of GU. It's currently at v3.6, will you be updating the launcher for this prapper? I don't think this version is natively portable as it has settings defaults for adding Win Context Menu items. Also, I've not checked my system after installing, but the online FAQ has entries about removal of GU Toolbars, Search engine and stuff like that?

Is there any chance of this making an official release soon/ever?

Thanks

Scott

3.7

I just checked this version, it looks quite different from 2.x & I haven't time at the moment to look into it. Sorry about that but if anyone else wants to have a crack at it, be my guest.

Well, a year later

Any hope for dusting this off?

This version 2.xxxx portable package downloads the current version (5.6.0.13) from the Glary website but it won't run.

I've tried running the current version base app to create their "portable" version. The "portable" version looks like it works OK, but leaves itself running in the background even after quitting. Doesn't seem like a good thing. I haven't checked registry, etc.

The reason it not running

Is glarys changed the exe file name to another I think Glarys integrator so that means the actual ini in the program for Portable apps needs adjusting

Not by me at the moment I'm afraid but just to reiterate, if anyone wants to take this over, feel free.

Thanks

I don't use it often... usually helping friends clean up their dreadful computers, so I'm not very concerned if it isn't fully portable. It is always better when I leave anyway. [ugh, that didn't sound right]

Uncheck

Evidently unchecking boxes in General settings (run at startup, quit on exit, etc) will tame the beast just a bit. May need "pro" ID to get there?
