In many instances Maxthon [ now v3.4.2.3000, but I believe also previous versions, too ] fail to end processes Maxthon.exe and MaxthonPortable.exe on exit, which in turn lead to "failed to close...will clean up" message when reopened later.
This could be problematic if plugged into a different computer on next start.

Maxthon and MaxthonPortable fail to close on exit
When you say "on exit", what are you referring to? Are you closing the app before shutting down the computer, or shutting it down while Maxthon is still running?
I close the app, but it remains running as a process.
What is strange, is that when I notice that in Task Manager - opening|running Maxthon works ( unlike in Mozilla which complains of process still running ) and usually exiting again does the trick.
But, normally I do not check Task Manager each time I shutdown, so the next time I open Maxthon it gives the error that it failed to shutdown properly.
How long after you close is it still running? It could be writing things to disk and shutting down. Or it could have a misbehaving plugin holding things up.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
This time - half an hour and counting
I do not believe it registers the "close|exit",
but lo and behold - I reopen Maxthon and Exit, and all is well, once more
I believe it hangs, sometimes ( maybe if it is open for a long time, or many tabs ~ both apply to my usage )
I have no plugins other than the ones that come with it,
( extension manager - empty )
Two things to try:
1. Delete/Rename the MaxthonPortable\Data directory and start fresh. If this solves the problem, than there's something wrong with your profile.
2. If that doesn't solve the problem, delete/rename the MaxthonPortable directory and start fresh.
If neither of those helps, please let us know.
[EDIT] Also, what is the full path you're running Maxthon Portable from?
ie., X:\PortableApps\MaxthonPortable
