Under Windows XP, it should always minimize to the tray. Under Win7, there is a setting you can add to <install location>\PortableApps.com\PortableAppsMenu.ini.
Open that file and add Windows7TaskbarIcon=false line just under where it says [DisplayOptions].
With that setting in place it will only ever minimize to the tray, and will not show a taskbar button.
TX for the reply. I got this right based on your advice, however, when i click on the button on the menu to the left of the "X", then it closes the app completely... I would expect it to minimize it. How can I prevent it from closing down completely?
The whole point of the new behavior is that the system tray is basically deprecated in Windows 7. All system tray icons are hidden by default unless you specifically show them. That means all the folks who launch the PA.c Platform on another computer and have it then go away when it loses focus have no idea where it went since the PA.c icon isn't shown in the system tray (it's hiding under the expander). Windows 7 did this because all the apps are iconized on the taskbar now, so there's no need to have things minimize to the system tray (plenty of room, user is more aware of what's actually running, etc).
So, it's an option for advanced users who want to turn off the taskbar icon and who know that the PA.c Platform will be invisible on every Windows 7/8 PC they use until they expand the system tray and then click the PA.c icon. It will be an option in the Advanced tab in a later release.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
As mentioned above, the feature is already implemented. You can turn it on now. There's just no UI so it's not discoverable by new users. And folks who want it on aren't likely to turn it off. It'll likely require a restart of the platform anyway.

Haven't been around for awhile but thanks for the clarification. I know this is an old post but I like having everything in the notification tray.

That's the eject button. To have the platform minimize, is click outside of it. There isn't a minimize Byron at the moment.
OK...that clarifies it. Thanks for the reply.
Cheers!

[DisplayOptions]
Windows7TaskbarIcon=false
Would be nice if this was default or a selectable feature under options.

What ever happened to the advanced option. Still hopeful to see option...
