Copywrite for apps

Is there any way of copywriting my intellectual property in an app? I have a great idea for a business that isn't mine, I would like to help them and make some money off it at the same time.

It depends on the license of the app you're adding your own code into.

A software license is a

A software license is a written contract that outlines what you can do with the software. You need to figure out what license your said app is under, and read it fully. For example, our PortableApps.com Launchers are almost all licensed in GPLv3. You can usually find this in the download info, or about page of the app.

There are very few licenses that allow you to do what you plan on, as people usually don't let others make money off their work.

Are you talking

Are you talking about:

  1. Writing your own program
  2. Modifying an existing program
  3. Content made by you within an existing program (a spreadsheet made in LibreOffice Portable, for example)

?

If 1: Depends on the licence you release the program under.
If 2: Depends on the licence of the existing program.
If 3: Depends on a lot of factors. You can't copyright a mathematical formula, the procedure by which your product gets from start to finish, or the type of fields within a form for example, but you can (and usually automatically have) copyright for things such as artwork, graphics, text (as a whole, or meaningful part, so you can't copyright the words "The", "flying", "elephant", "spun", "in" or "space" but you could copyright the text "The flying elephant spun in space".)

There are a lot of factors, so it honestly comes down to exactly what you are doing as to whether it is actually classed intellectual property or not.
