KeePass: Keypass leaving files behind?

I thought I would give Keypass a look and installed in on an external drive under a conventional PortableApps installation. After running the program (and not being able to successfully import a file from PasswordSafe Sad ) I found files left on my C drive in:

C:\users\xxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent items\

(xxxxx is the name of my computer)

I would appreciate any comments on this as well as how PasswordSafe files might be imported.

This folder is automatically

This folder is automatically generated by Windows. This folder can be created/modified as a result of running any app, portable or otherwise, as well as just by opening files.

There is no privacy risk to this, as the contents of the folder are all just shortcuts to the original files that have been generated by Windows.

As for importing from Password Safe, you need a plugin for that.

Importing Password Safe files

Thanks for your quick response. I went to the plugin page and the only one that seemed relevant was PwSafeDBInport but that plug in seems to be intended only for KeePass versions 1.09 and older. I believe the current version is 1.24. I tried it anyway but the program did not seem to recognize it. None of the other import plugins seemed to be relevant.

I have been using PasswordSafe for a long time but wanted to look at what else is out there. The hassle is becoming more that it's worth so I think I will stay with what I have.

BTW the version of KeePass on PortableApps does not seem to have a built in merge feature. I maintain PortableApps installations on several external drives which are connected to the various machines I use so this is a nice feature to have.

By merge feature I assume you

By merge feature I assume you mean to merge two KeePass databases? File->Import From->KeePass Database should cover this.

There are two options I can yet see for importing from PasswordSafe.

1. Export as CSV from PasswordSafe and then import to KeePass. From what I can glean from a quick Google, you will lose some info doing this but your passwords will be intact along with enough information to identify what is what.

2. If you only ever plan to do it once, or fairly rarely, you can install KeePass 1.09, install that plugin, open your existing database file from 1.24 and then import from PasswordSafe. Apparently the database format did not change during the 1.x line, so a 1.24 db is fully compatible with 1.09.

More on PasswordSafe to Keypass transfer

Ken,

I finally got the PasswordSafe data base imported into Keypass although it took a couple of trials to find the trick. The trick is to export from PasswordSafe by selecting their 'plain text' export option. When you do this a window pops up with appropriate warnings to the effect that a plain text version of you data base will be generated, a possible security risk. The trick here is to click on the box that says "Advanced field selection" which brings up another window allowing you to select which part of the database are going to be exported. Select group, name, password, notes. Not doing this causes the export to default to everything in the database and causes the import to Keypass to fail, or at least not properly transfer all the important items.

Now to try your suggestion regarding a "merge".

Thanks again for your interest and helpful comments.

KeePass is also ...

available as an Android app!
I've been using the portableapps version for a while and like it a lot. Just got an Android and it seems to work fine there. Just ported over the database file seamlessly.

PasswordSafe is also

PasswordSafe is also available for Android. I have a copy on my Nexus 7. I grabbed a copy of KeePass and will give it a look.
