It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

I'm getting "Download Error: Transfer Error on file" on all three branches of Chrome right now. And, just to be clear, this is for the .paf.exe file, not the standard Chrome installer.

It's working just fine here. That's an unusual error to see and means that something killed the download somehow. Can you download it via the browser and does the installer's downloader work from your location?

Just tried using the updater one more time after I saw your response, and the problem seems to have fixed itself. I'm going to assume that it was some weird network issue on my end, since I know AVG hasn't updated its definitions since the first time I tried, and the downloads seemed oddly slow while I was having the issues, which usually means I have a bad connection with the (school) network here.

Navigating to the the "About Chrome" page I see that the vewrsion is shown as 22.0.1229.79 which, I believe, is the current version. Immediately below that is a line: update failed (error:1).

I reinstalled, got no error message during the process, the program runs fine but the message is still there. I did this on two different external drives on two different machines, one XP, the other Windows 7. What's up with that?

Also, I noticed that in the upper right corner where the wrench used to be I now have three horizontal bars. Is this related to the failed update message?

Google Chrome's internal updater doesn't work unless it is installed in the local PC, which isn't portable. As such, it's disabled in the portable version. When disabled, it shows an error in About, meaning it can't check for updated versions or update. It's normal and always been like that.

Thanks John.

Your reply makes sense, but begs the question - how do we update Chrome Portable, so that we get the latest version and still preserve all our individual customizations?

TIA,

Steve

You update Chrome Portable the same way you update all of our apps - you simply install the new version over top the old one. The easiest way to do this is with the platform's built-in updater, but it isn't necessary to use it if you don't want to.

Thanks, Gord.

I use FF Portable, and the updates for that work in the normal way from within FF. That's the source of my confusion with Chrome Portable. I've never had to download the latest FF Portable and install on top.

So, for Chrome, when I install on top, what happens to settings and all the zillions of Chrome customizations, extensions, AdBlock, ScriptNo etc. ?

TIA,

Steve

Exactly the same. Nothing is lost. All PortableApps.com apps allow you to do an 'in place upgrade' and install a new version over the old. That's what happens when you use the PortableApps.com Platform. Google Chrome's normal updater is a service installed into Windows and can't be made portable (just as Chrome proxy settings, password encryption, certificate management, etc are all tied to the OS). Like all of Firefox's features, Firefox's updater is natively portable, though we recommend that you still update by downloading the new version from us to ensure you get updates to the portable launcher, etc. Firefox is basically a complete standalone app, so everything keeps working. Chrome ties into the OS in many ways and is actually dependent on Internet Explorer for several features, making it much less portable.

We recommend using the PortableApps.com Platform as it handles all of this for you without you needing to worry about anything behind the scenes.

I was running out of disc space on my PC default disc partition which the standard google chrome installs to and doesn't give you any option to install anywhere else.

So I saw this portable app, thought I might be able to install this to a different partition and I downloaded the
"GoogleChromePortable_22.0.1229.94_online.paf.exe"
file OK, ran it, nominated a different folder for it to install to - P:\Program Files\google\chrome portable\
installed it and it gave an option to run google chrome and I did so and it started up OK.

But I didn't see any link to run google chrome again was I simply to close the chrome browser.

I don't see a icon on my desktop. I don't see a START - All Programs - entry to start chrome that way.

So I thought "OK, I'll create a short-cut to the exe file which will be where it installed the system files to", but, surprise, I can't find the system files! They are not where I thought I had told google chrome portable to install to.

So I thought - hey once I close google chrome I'll have no way of restarting it, unless I set it as my default browser, which I did as a temporary measure but that's not satisfactory. I might want to change my default browser and I want to create a desktop icon etc. so I need to know where the system files are!

So next I checked START - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.

But google chrome is not listed there. So now I don't know how to uninstall google chrome portable app either.

So I want to know how to find the system files especially the .exe file so I can link to it to run google chrome. I also want to keep an eye on the disc space it is using up since that was the reason I am using the portable app on my PC in the first place.

Can someone help please? Is there any way to get the chrome browser to tell me where its system files are located on my PC?

My PC's operating system is Windows XP.

I have just noticed that google chrome has started storing browser cache data in the default disc partition, in my case "Q"
Q:\Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Application Data\Google

which I want to change to another disc partition since it is that browser cache data that takes up a lot of disc space eventually. So will I have to use something like this?
Change Cache Location In Google Chrome

Portable means it doesn't install into add/remove programs or create a shortcut in your Start menu. You need to install it, remember where you installed it, and then manually create a shortcut to GoogleChromePortable.exe in to your start menu. If you create a shortcut to chrome.exe or set Chrome as your default browser, it will run in local mode and all your Chrome settings and cache will be saved to C:\.

Thanks that's helpful.

As regards the mystery of the disappearing system files, before I read your comment I tried to do another install to see if I could find any clues. This time I installed in the directory I had downloaded the installer file into and the system files went into a newly created folder called
"GoogleChromePortable"

So then I did a disc files search to see if I could find other folders of "GoogleChromePortable" name and I found where the first set of system files had got saved - in an old folder in the P:\Program Files folder for another application altogether - which I had not consciously specified as my desired destination folder to install Chrome into so there was no way I could remember a folder location I had not consciously specified.

Perhaps it was clumsy keyboard / mouse skills on my part? No matter.

Thanks again.
