Delta updates?

Did the delta updates feature not work out?

Before the last update, app updates were a lot smaller, and I remember this feature being hyped up a little. Now after the 11.1 update, I see we're back to downloading the full app packages. Or maybe it's just me?

Platform, Revised Apps

Incremental updates only apply to the platform and revised apps. Incremental app updates for full app version changes would be pointless as nearly every file would change making the incremental package about the same size as the full size download. We don't do differential updates (binary updating of EXEs etc based on deltas) as they would be exceedingly slow on flash media.

Every platform update has had an associated incremental update (1/2 the download size and a MUCH faster install time since you're not getting all the app icons and theme graphics). And every app revision has had an associated incremental update with one exception (qBittorrent Rev 2 as I did not have time to build and test an incremental update). So, CheckSum Control, GIMP, gPodder and WinSCP are the apps with incremental updates available. As well as the platform. So, yes, we're doing incremental updates everywhere we can currently with a single exception due to time when it was released.

Gotcha

Thanks for the clarification, John. I just started the Platform this evening and saw Chrome, Firefox, LibreOffice, and Notepad++ at what appear to be their full sizes. I don't think I've gotten a delta update for the browsers, but I have for Libre and it was very small.

Anyway, keep up the good work. The Platform's the best it's been in years.

Right, Thanks

Yes, LibreOffice Portable 3.6.1.1 was an incremental update from 3.6.1 as it contained fixes for font handling. But 3.6.2 is a new LO release from 3.6.1 with nearly all new files, so whether updating or not, it's a full download.

Glad you like the way things are headed. More platform goodness is coming this weekend.
