Bare PortableApps platform run failure on WinPe4 (aka Win8Pe)

When I run Start.exe after booting into WinPe4 (the latest version of Windows PE, modeled after the Windows 8 platform), the PortableApps interface comes up, but I get the following error panel:

Title: "PortableApps.com Platform"
Body: "Class not registered. ClassID:
(56FDF344-FD6D-11D0-958A-006097C9A090)."

When I close the error panel, PortableApps stays up but seems crippled.
There are no other applications installed, just the PortableApps platform.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Untested

We don't test under WinPE. As it's a severely limited version of Windows, most software will not run under it (portable or not). Do you know if an older version of the platform worked on it? I believe it worked on WinPE3, or so I heard from other sources. As WinPE4 is based on Win8, it could matter where you run from as Win8 places severe limitations on where software can run from (nothing is allowed to run from C:\ root for instance). Also, you could try disabling autorun protection (see Advanced features) as I doubt the APIs it uses would even work in a PE environment.

Interestingly, PStart works

The PStart application comes up without a hitch.
Granted it's over 5 years old but... Does the fact that PStart works suggest what the problem with PortableApps might be?

I'd MUCH rather use PortableApps if I could get it to work.

John, is PStart your baby?

bublible: Could you PLEASE add option for "DELAYED STARTUP" (with defined delay in miliseconds/seconds - user could just write the number) to PSTART for any applicaiton in it that has set "AUTORUN: ON STARTUP"? I really miss this option a lot! Sad [2012-03-01 00:37] V2.11

webfork: bublible: recommend contacting the author directly for that via the website link. [2012-03-01 01:08] V2.11

Edited the Autorun.inf file...

Original contents:
[Autorun]
Icon=PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Graphics\usb.ico
Label=PortableApps.com

New contents:
[Autorun]
Icon=PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Graphics\usb.ico
Label=PortableApps.com
[Protection]
AutoRun=false

Is this what you meant, John?

If I did it right, the same error panel comes up.
Any other suggestions?

Thank you for your time, John.

PortableAppsMenu.ini

Those options go in the PortableAppsMenu.ini which is located in the PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data directory. They dictate whether or not the API calls to watch for changes are made.

I'm not involved with PStart. It's a closed source app we used to recommend folks use back nearly 8 years ago before I wrote our own menu.

Edited the PortableAppsMenu.ini file...

and set Autorun=False in the [Protection] section.

When I ran Start.exe, I got the same error panel.

Willing to try anything else...

Thank you for your prompt responses and help.

Old Versions

You could try some older versions to see if they have the same issue. Old version downloads Maybe one of the 10.x series.
