Download Soulseek Portable 1.57 Development Test 2 [1+1MB download / 5MB installed]
(MD5: 1d9faf1483bff7fed1c27b653a8d3f1f)
Online Installer: This is an online installer that will download additional files during setup.

Release Notes:

1.57 Development Test 2 (2010-10-31):

  • Should now prompt for elevation on Vista/7.
  • Added a couple of minor launcher upgrades (CheckForPlatformSplashDisable etc.)
  • Upgrade should be fine but back up first to be safe.

1.57 Development Test 1 (2010-04-06): Initial release

Notes:
Requires admin privileges.

On first run, go into 'Options/File Sharing Configuration' and browse to 'Data\save' and 'Data\shared'. You can use any other folders on your drive and then delete these if you don't need them.

If you enable 'Save client data to registry' in 'Options/General Options', all changes will be lost on the next run and Soulseek will use it's previous settings.

Tested with:
XP Home SP2 (Admin)

Sweet

I ran it and tried messing around with it for a bit and it looks like everything is working. dclean seems to accomplish what it needs to. I don't know if there's another way to remove those files from the Temporary Internet files folder, but removing everything is fine for me on Win7 64-bit with limited privileges.

It looks like everything is backed up and restored properly from the registry as well as AppData. Automatically adding/removing from the firewall looks like it's working properly and dclean does the job. As far as I can tell everything is working as it should. I haven't tried switching drives yet, but I'll let you know how that goes.

Thanks again for doing this. It was way beyond what I can do. Hopefully more people will end up using this than just me.

Great

Glad to hear it all seems to be working. If anything needs changing/fixing, just give me a shout.

If I ever find out how to get to those files with the NSIS variables $INTERNET_CACHE & $HISTORY, I'll have another look at that.

It just does not fulfill its

It just does not fulfill its purpose, as one needs admin privileges to use it - mostly you do not have that on other computers.

account type

Your account type in that message box is being read by UserInfo::GetAccountType so, unless I'm mistaken, if it says you are "user", then you are "user".

logged in as administrator,

stupid me, got it fixed myself - it's of course not enough to be logged in as admin, also the prog itself has to be set to "run as admin" - joy of win7 Smile

glad you got it figured

OK, glad you got it figured. I should probably set it to prompt, just to save the confusion, so expect an upgrade early next week. Thanks for pointing it out.

nice update!

thanks for your update, making the install easier.
Do you have an idea how to get the registry config/etc data from the non-portable version transferred to the portable one?
Not finished downloads/in queue and people on friends list would be missed when the data does not get transferred from registry.
I already tried to change the data to be saved to the folder instead of registry but that didn't seem to work (on the standard install).

Why does this need admin privileges?

I have not used Soulseek for quite a long time, but I cannot remember it needing admin privileges to run. Does it?

If it does not, why does this portable version need them?

The last thing I want is internet connected apps with full admin privileges.

You make a fair point. There

You make a fair point. There was some discussion on the subject before it was put together. I think the gist of it was that it wasn't possible to update the paths in the registry (maybe that's worth another look) so the config files were used (which were written to an admin only area). Then there was the firewall.

This post suggests there are still problems with it though. I can't really comment as Devo did most of the testing so maybe he will respond with the answer.

Only have the launcher elevated?

This is a pity, as having a portable version of Soulseek would be handy, as I have started using it again recently.

Isn't it possible to have only the launcher elevated, which does it stuff and then starts Soulseek with restricted rights?

For example, when I launch apps from the command line, which I usually run as an elevated domain super-admin, I have the launch script start the app with:

runas /trustevel:0x20000 foo.exe

SoulseekQT - new official client (beta)

I have just found out that there is a new official Soulseek client in beta. It's built on QT, so will be cross-format.

First impressions are good (although it does not seem very stable), but I cannot find where the settings files are saved yet. Hopefully it can be enhanced with scripts.

Thanks Jason404 for the news - will give it another try.
Hopefully someone picks up the development of a portable version again, that would be lovely!

Soulseek Portable 1.57 Development Test 2 DOES work

Hi everybody, it is true, there are some problems with Soulseek Portable 1.57 Development Test 2, but it works! I have been testing it as final user for the last six months, and its behaviour is OK. Not perfect, but OK.

First of all I think it installs something on the PC, but giving the fact I use Soulseek Portable always on the very same PC, it is fine with me.

As far as the downloading queue is concerned, as here reported getting cancelled when closing the software, you just have to be very careful when logging out, clicking on "disconnect" first and then "exit", and the following day your downloading list will still be there Wink

On SLSK page I read on 10/16/2012 it was launched the latest version of SoulseekQt (http://www.slsknet.org/news/node/996). Is there anybody out there who can take a look at it? Sadly enough I am not a technician, and cannot handle it Sad

Are there any other versions

Are there any other versions of Soulseek in portable version?
I use Soulseek 1.57 but I get the message "Error trying to get the list" when I try to browse the files of some users.
