I installed Sauerbraten (Cube 2) Portable into a folder I created on my desktop not on a flash drive and run the game from there, and it keeps freezing after just a few minutes during play and I can only use task manager to end task, other wise it just sits there frozen, I tried it on my other computer with a fresh down load and does the same thing, any hints ? 1 comp is WinXpPro the other is WinXpHome, they both should be able to run the game fairly well, I was getting 150 or so fps normally while fighting. 1 is an old P4 3Ghz, 1 GB Ram but the video is Geforce FX 5200, should still be plenty, the other comp is only a 1Ghz but the video is GF 6200.

I had the same problem, but a little light bulb popped in my head, and it worked. My steps are:
1. Go into the folder you downloaded Cube 2: Sauerbraten Portable into.
2. Go into the App folder.
3. Go into the Sauerbraten folder.
4. Open up the sauerbraten.bat file, and Cube 2 should be working now.
The game MIGHT crash (It did a few times), except it will happen less. Enjoy!
That way you are most likely running it in non portable mode so it might leave stuff on your machine and everywhere you run it on. The launcher is here for a reason! Its better to report the problem here (including the exact steps (if available) to reproduce it and your hardware configuration) so it can be fixed for everyone.

Dude, I tested it out. I launched the .bat file and modified my settings. That was on my laptop. Then I switched to the desktop (Faster), and launched it. Same settings. Go try it yourself, it works. Don't just go out and say that it won't work if you haven't done it yourself, because you have no proof that it isn't.
I tried it and you are right. It works and nothing is left behind. Should have tested it first myself. but still this is one of the few apps where you can do it that way.

This bug should be fixed though. I downloaded something around 400MB, I would hope everything works, not go bug fixing everything. Hey, at least it's such a fun game that I would've done that.
Using the .bat or the SauerbratenPortable.exe and the PA menu ? The .bat does have an attribute of, -r I noticed.
If you use the .bat, it stores the settings in \SauerbratenPortable\App\Sauerbraten; if you use the launcher, it stores them in \SauerbratenPortable\Data.

Because I copied my config and autoexec from data to app and everything is the same but it has not froze and I played for must be 4 straight hours, but when I use the launcher it freezes with in just a few maps, every time.
Hello i have a problem when i play cube 2 saubraten with high detail it crash i have the latest grpagic driver.
In the developer(test) version it dont crash with hight details I think it is a bug has everbody the same problem?

We still have no way to reproduce this and thus have no way of knowing why this happens. There's no obvious reason why the portable launcher makes it crash/freeze/whatever. It uses the exact same settings as the .bat file does (with the addition of setting the settings directory).
EDIT: I'll talk to Chris when I have the time. Maybe there's a bug in the launcher.
That is easy, I can reproduce it every single time using the launcher and it will freeze and stop responding with in 2 to 3 maps.
I have been using the .bat file since JediKnight5955 on May 21, 2011 gave the suggestion. I play it every day, I have let it run for days and days and even longer never once have I had a single problem with it crashing, freezing or not responding. Unrelated though, and I have not checked with the launcher, every once in a while I will be playing and will be moving and firing and all of a sudden the game will minimize out of the blue to the task bar Lol..

I'll test this again, but I do not recall having this problem before.
Tip: once the game went, but for some time (now) was probably something changed in the version.
Because I have played the game once and have it downloaded in portable apps without crashs.
So now it is working for you? No updates have been released on our end. Is this still a problem for anyone else?
Sorry for not testing this for myself yet, I should have some time this weekend. I've started classes again so I will be busy.
I have been using the .bat to play and works great, Sometimes If I let it sit for a couple of days or more it shuts down with a Gfx error I believe, right when it loads a new map, but when I run it from the launcher I can only play for a map or 2 maybe 3 or 4 but it freezes every time.
So the issue persists. I'll see if I have this problem this weekend.

You mean it didn't crash when it was a dev test? I don't know if I've tested it since it was officially released, so I wonder if John changed something. I'll keep a note of that when I test it, thanks.

It's not weird, if you install it on a flash drive. The packages folder consists of 500MB in over 5000 files. It may vary dependent on drive speed, but if you don't own an expensive high speed flash drive, it will take a long time.

I've been trying to reproduce it for some time now, testing nearly all maps in a row in highest possible resolution with all settings maxed. Some hundred frags later (damn - I'm really out of fp-shooters these days), nothing happend but smooth operation. No crash, only a slight stuttering on some maps every once in a while. I tried the campaign and some editing, too. The only thing I didn't test was multiplayer.
I see no difference running it off the launcher or the bat. The only thing the launcher does different is setting a working directory (don't know if running the bat means
App\Sauerbratenis the working dir orApp\Sauerbraten\bin) and hiding the command window. I adjusted my bat to use the settings dir for storing cfgs so no difference here either.I tested again and every time I played a map it would freeze, just as the op stated. I removed the line that hides the command window and it seemed to stop freezing. If he tests this and confirms it fixes the problem, I can send John an update and talk to Chris as to why this might be happening.

Go into X:\PortableApps\SauerbratenPortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher (or wherever you have Sauerbraten Portable installed), open SauerbratenPortable.ini in Notepad, and remove the line: 'HideCommandLineWindow=true' and test the launcher again.
Finally had a chance. I deleted that line, and ran the game using SauerbratenPortable.exe right inside my first Sauerbraten folder, played for like 3 hours on my server and 2 servers that are not mine. Seems fine No problems. I did notice what I call a cmd or ms-dos window behind my actual game, but I think that must run. It was probably there always. Not sure though.
That seems to have been the issue then.
The game itself spawns a command prompt when run. The line you removed hides that window, so removing it brought the window back again. I'll ask Chris why that might be causing it to hang.

I'm going to hold this a day or two until the updater supports partial updates. Having to download the whole thing just for a launcher update is a bit unwieldy. The launcher is all that changed right?

One line from the .ini was removed, plus the launcher itself has updated since its initial release. Everyone in this thread should know how to apply the fix themselves for the time being, and anyone else can come look for this thread anyway. I don't think it's that crucial to update immediately.

Installed game on usb and started playing. Froze lots of time and checked out the forums. Deleting that line seems to have fixed it but I have not played it for more then 30 minutes. Awesome work ^_^

You can easily fix it by yourself with the provided information in this thread.
As John stated, it will be updated when the updater routine in the platform supports partial updates (probably with one of the next platform releases).

As all has been said to this issue, you just have to wait until the update gets released. John has clearly stated that he will hold it back until the updater handles partial updates.
This is such a small issue and so easy to fix by yourself.
You begin to make a fool of yourself ranting for a minor update over and over again - where you have to download the whole package and wait for a long installation of the same files when you could simply edit a line in the SauerbratenPortable.ini.
Maybe John will release it earlier if he has time, but I think he has much more important things to do atm (implementing partial updates to the updater could be such thing).
Be patient. I sent the fix to John already. He has already responded with what he wants to do before the fix is released, so until that is done you will just have to wait.
Plus, I have already posted in this thread how to fix it yourself.

It crashes, I sent the fix to John and posted it in the meantime for anyone having this issue to do now, and now we're waiting for John to get to my emails about this.
I'll have it up in the next week. I need to rebuild it with the updated installer and then build the update installer.

es passiert während des spieles ich probiere es jetzt nochmal mit "fix it yourself easily" ich hoffe das es dann funktionieren wird, da wo es bei den test releases ware troper und justic edition ist es jedenfalls nicht abgestürzt auch nach längeren spielen, es war früher mal mein lieblings spiel, jetzt bin auch traurig

Nochmal in Ruhe und auf deutsch:
Die Korrektur ist bereits seit einiger Zeit bei John und er bringt bestimmt demnächst ein Update heraus, jetzt wo es durch das letzte Plattformupdate erst möglich ist, kleine Patches herauszugeben.
Es kann etwas dauern, da die Versorgungslage in New York nach dem Hurricane noch nicht optimal ist und es im Moment wichtigeres gibt, als einen Patch für ein unerhebliches Problem bei einem Spiel zu posten. Zumal das Problem sehr einfach selbst zu lösen ist.
Es kann ebenfalls auch sein, dass das Problem immer wieder mal in Vergessenheit gerät, weil der Ersteller des Threads vergessen hat [Bug] voranzustellen und er daher nicht in der Bug-Liste geführt wird. Das kann außer dem Thread-Ersteller auch nur ein Admin ändern.
All das löst sich nicht dadurch, dass ständig jemand penetrant das Komando gibt: "Macht das jetzt endlich!"
Alles klar, ne so wichtig ist es ja auch nicht(eher unwichtig), aber seit dem release des Spieles vor einem ganzen Jahre gibt es den fehler, und jetzt wäre es mal ganz langsam an der zeit diesen zu beheben.

Du hast schon recht, die Lösung ist auch schon seit langem fertig, aber die technische Grundlage zur Verteilung (kleine Patches) erst seit kurzem. Ich habe John schon erinnert, und er hatte es anscheinend auch auf dem Schirm. Er hat aber im Moment vermutlich anderes um die Ohren.
Ich wohne nicht in den USA, aber John versorgt uns regelmäßig mit Infos über die aktuelle Lage (s.o.).
So das sollte jetzt an OT reichen.
