I downloaded the putative 17.0 beta 5 from Sourceforge, and upon firing up the resulting installation was promptly informed that an update was available. Help/About revealed that the version I had just installed was 17.0 beta ... no beta X indication. I tried a couple of other Sourceforge mirrors and version. Apparently the same deal.

I reinstalled 17.0 beta 4 and Help/About still just says 17.0 plus a message to the effect you are using a beta version. Nevertheless, I did get the "update available" message immediately after installing what I understood to be 17.0 beta 5 ... or is beta 6 already available?

I can confirm this. A proper version is building right now.

Note that Help About will always only show X.0 Beta, not which beta.

Revision 2 has been released to the page and platform users. This includes the proper 17.0 Beta 5 release. Our apologies for the earlier mixup.

I can confirm. Mozilla re-arranged the way their download network works with 17 Beta 5, you only download a 'stub' online installer for Firefox from 17 on not the full installer, and our automated builder is having issues with it. I've fixed them and am rebuilding again. Apologies for our mistake.
